Windows messenger help

I have deleted msn7 from my pc as I waste far too much time chatting to people instead of working.

I now find that my computer signs me into windows messenger even though I have changed the options so that it doesn't. It seems to do it sneakily when I open internet explorer although I'm not certain of this. It's a pain to remember to go and sign out so then up pops a message from a friend and I'm off again.

I can't find windows messenger to uninstall it even though I have been to add/remove programmes.

Can anyone help me to remove temptation?

Have you looked on search in my computer?

you click on start, then search, then on all files and type in msn. see if that works?

I had this, Munchkin, it used to drive me nuts too (and it still happens on DH's login but for one of the kids so he suddenly gets matey messages from young people he's never met!)

I did find how to stop the automatic sign-in, and get a green pawn on the bottom toolbar, but can't remember how - and have to go out now but I will wrack my brians while I'm out!

Hope someone else comes up with something before I get back but if not I'll play around

just tried it and searched for messenger and it worked

I found a shortcut in my start menu folder which I have deleted. Now I'm searching for just plain messenger.

start
set program access and defaults
add/remove windows components
(windows components wizard)
scroll down to windows messenger

is there a tick in the box next to it?

(Mine isn't ticked but is installed????)

Oh, bum, I was hoping you had a tick, since I don't, so I don't knooooow. How about if you add a tick, will that give you access to options?

When someone starts chatting to you so that you get the messenger box up, with File/Actions/Tools etc at the top, is there anything helpful in there?

I wish I could remember how I got out of it before.

If there is no tick in the box you may have now successfully uninstalled it - try rebooting your PC if still having problems.

If not:

If you still have the green man icon on your tool bar (and it may be hidden until it starts running) then right click it and choose open. Then click Tools and Options. Go to the Preferences Tab and make sure there is no tick in the 'Run Messenger at Windows Startup' and 'Allow Messenger to run in the background' boxes. Or you can take those actions next time it boots itself up, before you log out of it.

Also check your email - some versions of Outlook auto boot messenger unless you disable it in Tools/Options.

I have no tick though, StG, and Windows Messenger is still enabled; it just doesn't run now unless I tell it to. Stopping the automatic running and getting the green pawn are the hard bits!

Right I have just checked.

Having a tick in the box just means Messenger is accessible from the start menu. So if you are having problems seeing the green man icon, to access the Tools/Options and turn off automatic start-up then you need to reactivate it first IYSWIM.

Tick the box and click next. Windows will update. Now click the green start button, go to all programs and you should see Messenger in the list. Open Messenger and then Tools/Options/Preferences etc as below. Close Messenger. It should now only start when you want it to.

That?s what you must have done Jan to solve the problem and it is what Munchkinola needs to do.

I've done all those things and the b* still signs in when I'm not looking. Today I opened outlook express and explorer. The green men are on the explorer tool bar next to my bluetooth icon. I clicked on it and tada, I was already signed in.

You can go into messengers options and delete your password. It won't be able to log in then. I'm pretty sure there's an option to sign in when you connect to the internet, that you can remove, too.

A bloke at work told me to download autoruns which finds all the things which auto run on your pc. I managed to find messenger and I think, I hope, I have managed to stop it.
