techy ipod question

i've just got a new laptop, does anyone know if i can transfer the 800 or so songs i have on my desktop's version of itunes onto the laptop? i thought i could transfer them from my ipod but apparently not (wiped them all ). i can share the songs across the network i've set up, but not transfer them into the laptop library. dp just looked at me blankly when i tried to explain the problem to him....

Might be a copy protection thing going on.

Couldn't possibly have anyone copying their entire music catalogue onto any old computer

Don't know how to get round it but keep on bumping cos i've seen a thread on this before (cant remember name, try searching threads with ipod) and a few people had suggestions

iTunes is very unfriendly for moving files. Goto the iTunes website, I seem to remember something about it on there. Something about registering your laptop as an authorised itunes machine, i think.
