Need techy HELP PLEASE. Has anybody downloaded Open Office onto Windows Vista machine?

I hate Vista and nothng seems to work with it. I have MS Works installed but need to be able to open and edit xls and doc files.. someone recommended OpenOffice but am nervous.

If you have used it can you recommend any good download sites there seems to be loads but the main OpenOffice org site seems to want to charge me for membership

I have it on this Vista laptop. No problems at all, and haven't been charged for membership - I went to the main org site. It should be free, but they do ask for a donation. However, are you sure you need to be a member to download?

I last downloaded only a month or so ago (laptop keeps having to be returned for general crapness), so maybe take another look?

I downloaded it that day but laptop is now running like a dog..
