Time to end my relationship with BT

The bastards want £122 to flick a switch install a line at my new house, and they are charging an £18 cancellation fee on my account.

I'm fed up with them leaching money out of me at every opportunity and their crappy customer services.

Talk Talk say they'll connect a line for £60 and provide phone & broadband for £17 per month.

Are they any good? Is there another way?

There is no cabling in the area, and no reception for mobile broadband.

Thanks

What about Sky?

sassy · 29/04/2009 13:58

We switched to TalkTalk last year, get phone line rental, all off-peak calls and broadband for £17. Never hd a problem with them. If you opt for on-line billing that saves you £1.25 a month as well.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 29/04/2009 13:59

Ooh, can Sky do it without cabling?

Don't talk to me about B(astard) Telecom! I had soo many problems with them, I switched to TalkTalk 2 years ago- I figured I'd probably still have problems, but at least it would cost me £30 less each month! So far, I have been surprisingly problem-free- bonus! BT need a wake-up call about their customer services- I think everyone should leave 'em (but then, maybe I am slightly biased )

SusieDerkins · 29/04/2009 14:03

Is it easy to change? We've been with BT forever but they annoy the hell out of me and I'd love to change to another company.

nymphadora · 29/04/2009 14:06

post office are good , still £102 TO CONNECT BUT MUCH CHEAPER THAN BT (oops sorry for caps)

mascaraohara · 29/04/2009 14:10

Oooh I want to leave BT I'm still furious with them for mis-selling me a package I didn't need.. contract is up in June I think so want to move around that time.

If you buy a package outside BT don't you still have to pay £11 a month line rental to BT?

TheCrackFox · 29/04/2009 14:12

I too am with BT and think they are shit. TBH it is laziness that keeps me with them.

Mascara, were you mis-sold the BT vision thing? I was too and it really is crap.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 29/04/2009 14:12

No you just pay the line rental to the company you go with and THEY pay it to BT (and sometimes, bizarrely, it is cheaper!)

BT keep phoning me up and asking if I have considered coming back- with all the letters of complaint I was forced to write there should be a big black X beside my name- they should never want me back, nor even dare to ask!

SusieDerkins · 29/04/2009 14:17

Thanks - will look into it.

mascaraohara · 29/04/2009 14:18

No but they sold me their unlimited broadband thingy, said that it was a month, flat rate, blah blah blah.. everything was included in that price so that's what I'd pay etc etc.. it was a big fat blatant lie it was only that price for a few months and they they charged me the line rental on top as well ended up being over £40 a month

but because that didn't become apparent until 3 months down the line when I rang to query my new bill they told me I was tied in for 18months nothing I could do etc

I really hate them.. but I hate sky equally, their customer service is terrible.

Seona1973 · 29/04/2009 14:20

we have skytv, phone and broadband and it works out much cheaper than BT. You dont need cabling as we are not in a cable area

Seona1973 · 29/04/2009 14:22

p.s. have never had a problem with sky

nymphadora · 29/04/2009 14:27

I pay line rental to post office think its about £35 a month for BB & unlimited phone calls

corriefan · 29/04/2009 14:28

Ugh I hate BT. They have tried to sneak so many charges in that I have had to ring up and get refunds for, e.g. caller id which I never asked for and line rental once I'd changed to sky (£10 a month so slightly cheaper too).
I last phoned them to get this refund and before being put through opted to do a survey after the call, I planned to have a big complain.
This time though customer services bloke was really apologetic and nice etc.

Then the survey started and every question began "thinking specifically about your last call to BT..." so it was hard to complain.
But one option was "following your last call would you recommend BT to a friend?" So I pressed 2 for no because I still wouldn't even though he was nice and it said "sorry that answer has not been recognised"!!!
I managed to have a rant when it asked for any additional comments though.

So if you want good service opt to do the questionnaire!

That reminds me I need to check they did in fact refund the money, the sneaks!

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 29/04/2009 14:29

Hmm, not sure whether lining Murdoch's pockets is any more palatable than BT's tbh...

Most broadband suppliers say that you need a BT line... but it seems with Sky and Talk Talk you don't. Post Office seems v expensive compared to Talk Talk. Are there any others?

nymphadora · 29/04/2009 14:56

I can't get most groups here, we have no cable and no sky because the council won't give planning permission for a dish!

Post Office has V. good customer service which seems really rare in my dealings with companies!

(Tiscali, sky,tesco,talk talk!!!)

snice · 29/04/2009 15:09

I see a lot of complaints about TalkTalk but we have never had any problems at all-have their broadband/phone package.
