I am about to buy furniture for my nb. I like the mamas and papas range but very expensive. My dh thinks i should by the cotbed but by the rest of furniture from ikea as this is much cheaper. This does not match as well but saving hundreds of pounds. Am i being stupid wanting everything to match.

I think with first babies you want everything to be perfect and match. But in reality it doesn't matter. As long as you have everything you need, I bet the money you save will be spent on something else for the baby. But it is lovely buying baby items, especially cute little clothes.

It's not stupid at all but there was no way we could afford that!! Toys'r'us might be a cheaper place to look. I haven't brought a babies wardrobe, I'm getting one with a rail on one side only, shelving on the other side and three drawers at the bottom. It is just beech coloured but I plan to stencil it as I have already done with the drawers. It is fiddly and the results can be variable but it will save you a fortune!!

basl men are always so much more practical than women - would the expensive furniture last until baby is older? Just thinking that the cheaper stuff might not therefore its a false economy (thats usually my story and I'm sticking to it) LOL - no but kid is right no matter what you buy all the money will go on the baby - enjoy shopping!!!

I would have a good look around first.I would'nt bother with a baby wardrobe,as i brought one for my first dd,and believe me you don't get enough space,i tried not to buy many clothes but you do!!.The wardrobe came in use again for my second dd and it's full.(only 8 weeks old!)

it's true.

we got a lovely antique set matching from mothercare as it was nearly half the price of the m&p range dd is now 3 and it's all still in use apart from the cot (which i wish we'd got a cot bed)and gors perfect in her princess bedroom.

i spent a fortune on matching baby furniture range from m&p when ds1 was born, it was lovely for the first six months and then it was too small and the chest of drawers had a bath in what should have been the top drawer,thus limiting it for further use (although have to say never used the bath in the bedroom as too far away from the bathrooom to fill it up!) my cot bed was renderd useless when my mum brought ds a little tikes car bed because she'd always wanted one for my brother but could never afford it then.
the only thing that i reused for ds2 was the cot bed which he again slept in for 18 months and is now in the car bed. i did manage to sell it all for about a quarter of what i paid for it, which i put towards buying a nice full sized wardrobe and chest of drawers from john lewis. the chest of drawers was high enough to use as a changing table when upstairs and when his clothes were only little i put a couple of sets of plastic drawers (from next £20) in the bottom and put nappies, wipes etc in those, which are now used as toy boxes.

Hi! I bought a changing table and a cupboard in IKEA baby section. Great purchase. The changing table is also a chest drawer and when you change the baby she is facing you whereas with most of the changing units the baby is sideways - very unconvenient -. I agree with vickiyumyum the bath in the unit is useless. My friends had warned me about this.
I had bought a nice wooden cot in Mothercare but my son grew out of it when he was 5 months and had to be moved to a cotbed.
Again I agree with Vickiyumyum that the furniture is very unlikely to match for long! Bye
