How much does a new bathroom cost?

Our bathroom is just as it was when we moved in (7 years ago).

It has a sh*t brown batroom suite _ yuk yuk yuk- horrid pink and biege tiles, and an old decrepit pink carpet. Cost worries are two-fold,

1. Its a big room (by modern standards)Currently tiled half way up the walls all the way round the room. Will taking the tiles off wreck the walls, costing more?
2. The fittings will all be imperial measurements, will that mean changing more pipes and stuff.

The bathroom is one of the main things I hate about the house (don't really like any of it) and I'm hoping to be moved by this time next year (dh interview today in Oxford, which would be nice).
How much money do I have to find?

hi easy, we're having our suite replaced and bathroom redecorated. The work alone - pretty much a straight swap but we're having a bidet installed too, a recessed thermostatic shower put in and the tiles removed and walls replastered and retiled, as well as underfloor heating put down and the floor retiled - will cost roughly £1500. The sky's the limit when it comes to the parts! Though if you shop around online you will find baths etc much cheaper than at homebase or bathstore. I expect ours will cost around £3000 in total, with nice modern fittings.

I'd budget around £3500 - £4000 for a total re-do of a large-ish bathroom. Like gc says, it's not the suite that costs, it's the labour and plumbing.

Easy, your bathroom sounds almost identical to our old one: brown suite, pinkish tiles, pink carpet, largish room, but our walls were fully tiled.

I think in answer to your question, unfortunately, the answer that springs to mind is how long is a piece of string? We twice had estimates done for a new bathroom but twice did not go ahead with it (the second time because we had to move suddenly) so I don't know exactly, but we were going to spend about £9 - 10,000 but that included doing the downstairs loo too. It can be done for loads less money or loads less, it depends on where you go and how you get it done.

I recognise that labour is expensive. Fortunately my cleaning-lady's husband is an excellent handy-man, and will do much of the non-specialised stuff for about a fiver an hour for us, which helps a bit. I knoww I'll need a plasterer for the walls, and a plumber for some of the stuff.

well easy that sounds great, you might be able to do it for less than us. our handyman said it's 5-7 days labour. the bathroom is about 7ft x 11ft and most of the walls are tiled.

Lonelymum, how did you get on selling the house with a horrid bathroom (I've got the feeling it affects the saleability)

£1500 for removal of your old suite and tiles and replacing with a new, basic suite with mixer taps. They use flexible connections on the pipeworks so you don't have to worry about matching you old ones - you can even move your sanitary ware around without it costing more.

Add to that cost of replastering (~£300), tiles and tiling, flooring and any other redecoration. Cabinets, loo roll holders, towel rails etc are obscenely expensive.

Agree with NDP. Cost us about 6k to completely refit family bathroom and ensuite shower room. The orginal tiling was in disrepair and had caused water seepage so one rotten stud wall had to be replaced too.

We paid around £7k (in London) but did have everything stripped re-plastered fully tiles etc but we also had everything re-plumbed as we moved bath & sink and added a shower. I think it costs a lot more to re-plumb things.

I would recommend bathstore.com for a quote. You can even get them to do a fully computerised design for around £25.

we had everything done and everything replaced from the ceiling to the wall tiles to the lighting and all in it ended up at around £7k which isn't cheap! (London) but tiles can be tiled over - that's what they did in ours and it has turned out fine plus avoided the lenghty and messy process of tile removal.Shop around though and DO NOT even consider Dolphin bathrooms!

Bad news Easy: we haven't sold it yet! Although, I always think that if I saw a house with a horrid bathroom (well, I did, our old house but we bought it in desperate times when we would have bought anything we could afford) but anyway, I always think that if I saw a house with a horrid bathroom, I would have the sense to see past it and maybe ask for a reduction in price. Part of me didn't want to upgrade our bathroom because I thought if ever we moved, I couldn't bear the thought of someone moving in, not liking it and ripping it out and starting again - such a waste. So maybe, if you think you might move, it might be worth just leaving it and accepting a lower price when you sell it.

we paid aboout £6,000 5 years ago. It's a small room but we had it fully retiled, new suite, fitted cupboards, new shower over the bath. I absolutely love it - favourite room decor wise and worth every penny.

That's the thing, I'm aching to move, I hate this house, hate the estate that it's on, and would dearly love to leave Nottingham altogether.

So do I spend the money to help sell the place, or leave the horrid bathroom and allow prospective buyers to use it as a deal.

We paid about £250 for the bath suite, plain white, went for expensive taps etc. did not go for tiles went for an expensive laminated boarding. My dh fitted it all himself, he isn't a plumber just a good diy. I think we spent about £750 in total. Got most of the fittings etc through trade outlets and paid cash. Saved a fortune.

I got a quote today for having our bathroom re-tiled. They want us to remove the old tiles (floor to ceiling) and re-plaster the walls if necessay and supply the tiles. They will charge us £300 to tile. No idea if this is a reasonable quote but it seems as if we will be doing all the hard work!

Easy, according to House Doctor/Selling Houses/Property Ladder/Put Your Money Where Your House is/etc., you are almost guaranteed get your money back on a new bathroom, and more. It's not unreasonable to say that a £1500 investment could lead to £5000 on the asking price.

parents just paided £3500 for a new bath - power shower in cubile - loo - basin and towel rail - floor to celling tiles plumbed in and lobour etc.

They brought all the bath etc from b&q and then brought the tiles from a warehouse place in codnor (main rd) then found a plumber who did the whole lot for them.

Looks fantstic and obviously cost alot less as they brought all the bits them selfs rather than getting it all direct.

Also mean't to say it's a pretty large bathroom as perviously use to be a bedroom.

Poppy, that sounds great, but no way can I let my dh near any of the work.
He once tried to move a cupboard in the kitchen of our old house. He drilled into an electric cable first (blackened hole in the wall, nearly blew himself up) and when he did manage to fix the cupboard up (further down the kitchen) it was on a slope, so when I put the glasses in it, they slid to one side !!
So we shall have to pay for labour.

We've just had 2 quotes. We need old bathroom suite removing and replacing ( toilet,sink, bath and shower cubicle), retiling (bathroom is tiled floor to ceiling). Total costs inc labour £3500 - £3800.

After reading these posts, they now appear to be more reasonable than I first thought, however we only have a teeny bathroom and the replacement stuff is only basic, as we too are wanting to move and our bathroom is truly rotten!

I'd recommend you get yourself a pump in the airing cupboard (about £300) to increase your water pressure. It has made such a difference in our house.

If you are keeping all the same positions it shouldn't be too bad. You can actually tile straight over existing tiles if you want to keep the budget down.

Go to a bathroom centre that has a trade counter. Order everything you need from the trade counter and you'll get the trade discount. Batting your eyelids may cause a further discount.

There is a massive price difference so get loads of brochures. Get to lots of showrooms and just copy what you like. Beige tiles with a white suite looks smart. Good luck.
