Help! The Engine Management System light...

What can it mean if it flashes?

Mine does it every time I reach 68mph - slower if I am on an uphill stretch of motorway, or accelarating fast. Then it stops when I slow down.

I took it to the garage and they could find nothing wrong, but changed the HD leads (whatever they are)..It still does the same thing.

I will be driving from London to the Northern side of the Lakes soon...is this dicey? Anyway, it drives me mad and makes me anxious.

My car is a Fiat Punto.

Anyone with any insight?

if your engine management light is coming on they should be able to get an idea of the problem by plugging it in to get a report, my garage did when this was happening intermitantly (sp?)
Could it be something like the airflow meter?

Take it back to the garage and make them fix it. No idea what it can mean in particular, but can often be an Engine Management System issue if you get the light on only in particular situations

Thanks - I will ask if they have plugged it in and got a report!

Bloody HD leads cost £100...

Bizarre but true.. that light used to come on at the same point on my journey to work everytime I drove DH's car. Never did it with my car. The speedometer needle would also cut out and sink to 0mph, only for it to spring to life a minute or so later. It came up in conversation once with a mate of ours, who also drives a Ford Focus and takes the same route to work as I do. Turns out the same thing was happening to him, in exactly the same place!! We never got it looked at as we assumed it was just a weird thing that couldn't be explained

Had same problem with my Fiat Punto Sporting. When tested at Fiat they said it was a valve of some sort, which put the right amount of petrol mix into the engine. It had an intermittent light so took it away with no fix required. Some months later, light came on again, then disappeared. Then a few months later the whole thing 'died' . Proper died. £600 for new engine computer- £300 ish for second hand one, managed to get computer reprogrammed for £180- and traded it in asap. Short trips may be ok but once you get speed up (as you've described), the light is on again. Certainly suggest you get a good garage to do another diagnostic on it. I googled it and found it mentioned heavily on the net as a Fiat (punto) problem; maybe ask the garage to check the catalytic converter or the 'flow' valve which determines the mix of petrol into the engine.
