Paperwork and payslips, how long do you keep them for?

I have got all my payslips from the whole of my working life which is 8 years. I'm sure I dont need them for anything. I have also kept all my credit card and bank statments. I dont know why as cannot think of anything I will need them for.

How long do you kep these documents for? Also about the pay slips, would you just chuck them and keep the final tax year slips?

I use to keep all these things too but never needed to and they took up so much space I was ruthless and chucked them all out.

The only time I ever needed any of them was when I applied for a mortgage and even then they only wanted last 4 weeks.

Keep about 6 months worth or a year and throw the rest out (making sure you shread them)

I usually just check my bank statements and then throw them away.

Tyhe last 4weeks? really I thought they would need much more than that, not that I am in a position to apply for a mortage right now...

Yes you are right I need to be ruthless, was just wondering weather there could be any need for all this paper but I dont think so...
