Apart from pat self on back?

I am thinking of retraining but no idea about jobs. Those are the things I'm considering studying - what REAL ACTUAL JOBS might I get with a postgrad MA/PHD in them?

I mean ones that pay money. Any money. But must be money.

Thanks dearies.

is this kind of thing up your street? I have no idea but again it might be the kind of 'wolf from door keeping' job that would put your face about in a new environment and you could do postgrad stuff alongside perhaps?

Fennel · 23/04/2009 14:27

Sorry, I meant onebatmother, not policywonk there. Got my mumsnetters mixed up .

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:29

Jeez, this lot have got loads of money: another health and humanities PhD scholarship

Thing is, even if it isn't right up your street, but you are vaguely interested in the philosophy of health, it might be worth considering as funding for PhDs is like hen's teeth.

Threadworm · 23/04/2009 14:35

That health and humanities phd does sound genuinely interesting, will. I'd go for it. Do you think you have to meet the £11 000 fee from the £21 000 stipend?

(I did do Distress and Disorder at phd, but that wasn't intentional.)

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:40

Can you commute to Leeds and speak Japanese?!

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:43

Now THIS is the kind of thing you want onebat... PhD training and fees at a good university AND foot in the door with teaching I have no farking idea what scenography is though.

Shame it is in Leeds again but they might be flexible and LOTS of academics commute and maybe stay over 1-2 nights a week for their perfect job...

[can you tell I'm supposed to be marking?]

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:45

eek deadline is tomorrow...

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:46

Another Leeds/Japanese film studentship

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:47

oops. Sheffield. Am Lancastrian: all Yorkshire cities look the same to me.

Threadworm · 23/04/2009 14:47

Is that really a minicab you are driving, Wilf, or a steamroller?

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:50

You could use PolicyWonk as one of your case studies

I'm gonna stop in a minute honest. Must get back to reading shite about the epistemological foundations of appropriate research design. Or 'why I chose to stand outside the pub instead of forming a properly random probability sample'...

WilfSell · 23/04/2009 14:55

this looks like an interesting post and it doesn't say you MUST have PG qualifications...

ruty · 23/04/2009 17:12

it was Threadie and Wilf's observation that chimed with my inner sat nav onebat. That and never bothering to do my pelvic floor exercises.

onebatmother · 23/04/2009 19:50

OK back at 9 to look through all these. Wilf you're a wonder.

First thoughts - I did Eng lit so I don't think they'll have me on health and humanities?

Scenography is....

The THEATRE.

Oh bloody hell, my head is completely spinning.

I don't even feel that I fully understand the differences between the first three disciplines - there seems to be a huge amount of crossover betwen sociology and cultural studies for example, but also potentially with pscyhol. Anyone got any one line definition that would actually stick in my mind?

I've just been looking at the research grant application for the film/television studies thing at Leeds, thinking I could pull my interest in pornography in that direction and that I should call the faculty tomorrow and see whether that deadline is final and .. and.. I suddenly thought noooooo! This is madness - I just fell into Eng LIt, and just fell (kind of) into TV, and now the WHOLE POINT is to think things through very carefully and to know what I'm doing and where I'm going.

I feel as though I should go through this whole thread and do some kind of chart, breaking it all down into pro/anti academia, most interesting subject area, most practical subject area re job at the end of it. Gah..

I think the visual anthropology one is too anthropological Wilf. All the phd's are doing global stuff.

The fem review is worth thinking about, as a stop-gap as you suggest. Do you think they'd need someone to be up to date on theory? I can't remember the first thing now. But could bone up I suppose.

This is half the prob - no idea what is expected in any of these areas.

Scenology - no can do, I don't think. It's dramaturgy..

I have just been to an evening at DS1's 6th form college, about applying to university.

You have my every sympathy!

DS1 has now, tonight, only just now, decided that he doesn't want to study any of his A level subjects at university. But that he also doesn't know what he wants to do.

Applications have to be in by September, and we have to do our university visits over the next 2-3 months. Would be great if we knew what we were looking for....

onebatmother · 23/04/2009 22:09

Well here's a story. I didn't visit any of my first choices (Manchester/Liverpool). Got into both (already done A-levels) then changed my mind at the VERY last minute and applied to KCL because I had met a man and didn't want to leave London.

That's the kind of level of chaos that has attended these kind of choices for me in the past

I remember really enjoying toddling round the country to look at universities.

I didn't do the Uni thing immediately from school. I left school on 16th June and started my first job on 22nd June in London (and I came from Hicksville, Suffolk). I still remember that rush I felt at a London tube station. It was truly marvellous.

onebatmother · 23/04/2009 22:57

Found my dream masters MSc Gender and Media at the LSE
www.lse.ac.uk/collections/genderInstitute/gidegrees.htm

its... £9.5K ha ha ha

and that's just the fees

but I could really imagine myself having an academic career for the rest of my life in that area.

I'm going to call them tomorrow to find out what the funding options are. I've missed them all for this year I htink.

A list of what though LG?! This is my question.

Also does anyone know if sociology always involves a lot of primary field research ie talking to real people ?
