Yes, I'd rather buy decent food/organic than spend money on something that is purely image. Not that I'm not partial to a nice dress or shoes (though not too expensive or I'd get nervous about wearing it in case it got dirty!), but in the case of having to make the choice due to limited budget I'd rather sacrifice the superficial item. When I was poor I bought pretty much all my clothes from the market. Those were the days when you could actually find nice stuff at Papiniano though.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 24/04/2009 13:14

same here. good food as always been a priority even in my cheap days, not that I was cooking then. Because of those days a lot of what I had previous to that and a lot of what I have now feels like a blessing (sometimes even a curse actually as you feel enslaved by must haves etc). I hope I won;t get too used to what we have to start thinking along those lines...

must go now.

Brangelina · 24/04/2009 13:15

Just saw that Sputnik used to be a beekeeper. Wow. I've always been intrigued about beekeeping. Did you talk to your bees?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 24/04/2009 13:16

If I could buy armany the way I buy H&M I won't complain for sure.

Brangelina · 24/04/2009 13:16

Yes, I've got to go too, I still have a pile of work and want to get away early.

Brangelina · 24/04/2009 13:18

I once bought a knock off Versace jacket from the market. It cost me 50.000 lire at the time. Unfortunately it was too small so I sold it to someone else for a lot more money.

At the same market now there are lots of stalla with cheap Chines stuff. It's really gone downhill.

gio71 · 24/04/2009 13:24

agree with food, thats where most of my money goes I think.
150k comment makes me want to find poster and bang head repeatedly against a brick wall to attempt to knock sense/perspective into it! Daft mare!
Brange, been looking at apartments in area you recommended, looks lovely. Am tempted to leave it longer and see if can get more of a bargain nearer time, surely there will be more apartments available for cheaper prices now all the 150k plus Brits will have to summer in Skegness rather than Tuscany???

francagoestohollywood · 24/04/2009 13:29

Lol at if I could buy armani the way I buy H&M... . I've had a difficult relationships with H&M at the moment, I find that everything looks crap, which I didn't until some time ago. Is it me or is it going downhill a bit? Or is it the Italian H&M who stock only vestiti very gini???

Masseuse, can i ask you where are you from in Italy originally? I won't mind if you don't want to answer this

Holidays... we are quite lucky in the holiday dept, as dh has long periods when he doesn't need to be around, and can work from everywhere, all he needs is a laptop.
This year we are planning to go to Istria the last 2 weeks of june... I'm really excited, but I've just found out that ds's school organizes courses with English teachers (so it's like school but in english) exactly those 2 weeks. Crappola!

francagoestohollywood · 24/04/2009 13:33

apologies for terrible english

Rosa · 24/04/2009 13:35

If the people who can't live on 150k want to swap for a year and come and live in Venice I am up for it ...Will even throw a boat in for personal use !
FGS .......
I am lucky being fat as I can't buy clothes here anyway so I use my money on buying pushchairs. I do have a lovely and expensive winter wool coat which I stroke every winter when I can't get into it. PLus in my youth I bought some expensive bags and yes they are still going strong!
RighT Dh says yes so going to ring the place now.. I am ashamed to say my holiday will be 2 weeks al mare 1 week in montagna and then 2 months in the UK...The 2 months are free though well almost we do share the Tescos shop !!!
It means we will have 2 weeks in Venice in June ( pre warning you all for complaints of humididty etc etc ). Dh will be off for the montagna but mare he will be working most days so I am hoping that we pick the right apartment !!

That sounds lovely Rosa

TheMysticMasseuse · 24/04/2009 13:57

Franca (oh how i love being called "masseuse"!!! )

i am from calabria originally but moved around a lot and my parents live in rome now...

Sputnik · 24/04/2009 14:34

Like your new name Masseuse . If you're ever in Rome neck of the woods we should organise a meet up with Gio maybe, especially as I will soon officially be becoming a Roman.

Rosa, you deserve a holiday, sounds like you've had quite a tough winter. I think our summer will mostly be spent painting our new apartment and assembling flat pack.

Went to visit a couple of english schools for DD today. A cheaper one which was quite small and friendly, but tiny classrooms and not much in the way of facillities. The other one was in a different league really. Fate will probably decide for us as the first probably won't have a place anyway, we'll know in a couple of weeks.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 24/04/2009 16:27

H&M reaLLY GOING DOWNHILL upps sorry it's friend's comp. where do I buy now??? oh for the first time in my life topshop aND THE ohh bollocks TKmax. don't buy often though. what's the point i'm always covered in snot anyway.

very busy rushed day.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 24/04/2009 16:28

masseuse when are going to arrange a meet-up, we are neighbours after all.

Sputnik · 24/04/2009 16:56

Oh I thought it was just me with H&M. Everyone raves about it but I never found anything that great. Nice for kid's stuff though.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 24/04/2009 17:49

I used to love H&M, but then I stopped going as always put off by the mess... I did have lots of valentino, armani, CK and katherine hamnett stuff, but just because I used to work in sample sales to boost my McD wage (god, I used to actually be able to save then!). now I guess my most precious possession is a max & co long winter coat I got on sale... wasn;t cheap, but worth every cent...

agree with the money thing, the people I know who shouldn't really be complainng will only get cheap clothes (not that there's anything worng with that, I do the same) and food because she can't afford anything as she's a SAHM and would feel guilty spending all that money, but she doesn't feel guilty spending on stuff she could really cut back on which isn't necessary.... I mean, I know we dont want for anything (well, for now, we're really tryig hard as we'll have 3 months with no income at all soon), but we certainly could do without certain things if needed

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 24/04/2009 17:49

hope you can make sense of what I was trying to say, DD kept on pressing keys and mouse....

francagoestohollywood · 24/04/2009 19:49

sunflower!

Yes, H&M is still good for children, but it used to be better !

Masseuse, yes, of course, I think you mentioned already you were from Calabria originally.
I'm actually quite of all you Romans, I must force convince dh that it'd be good to spend a weekend there. Also, I promised ds that I'd take him to see the Colosseum etc. Ds loves to travel!

Sputnik, is that one of those impossible posh schools only to be found in Rome? Like the one in tre metri sopra il cielo ?

francagoestohollywood · 24/04/2009 19:50

I meant impossibly posh. In Milan private schools aren't as posh, I suppose it's because in rome there are all those ambasciate.

TheMysticMasseuse · 24/04/2009 20:05

no the schools in rome are posher for different reasons... no time now, will elaborate another time...

francagoestohollywood · 24/04/2009 20:34
francagoestohollywood · 24/04/2009 20:35

The aristocrats?
Politicians?

francagoestohollywood · 24/04/2009 20:40

Tbh I don't know much about private schools in rome, I'm just speculating on the basis of the movies I saw, like Amarsi un po' dei fratelli vanzina

Sputnik · 24/04/2009 22:23

Actually neither of them was posh , I think the posh ones are probably to be found more in the centre. The first was very friendly, small and quite informal, the second bigger and seemed much like a British school, all the teachers were British.
Interested to hear MM's theory now.

I just realised I forgot to answer Brange's beekeeping question, bees are utterly fascinating, especially how they communicate, and beekeeping is a question of balancing out loads of factors like weather, size of the family, age of the queen bee, what's in bloom etc etc. Unfortunatly I havn't really been able to do any hands-on beekeeping for ages, though we do still have a few hives. We had nearly 100 at one time, and a shop selling honey and stuff. It was backbreaking and very hot work though!
