I have absolutely no idea at all what this consists of, other then it seems to be card based. I really don't want to become an expert but could someone explain the basics to me? My son has been invited to a Pokemon party by his friend and my nephew wants Pokemon stuff for his birthday. He doesn't have anything Pokemon and would like a 'starter pack'. Googling Pokemon cards though just confuses me even more! What is the basic stuff needed to start off in the world of Pokemon?
Thanks in advance.

they do set 'starter packs' which are the bigger ones (i.e. more expensive) and then top up packs. You really need a starter pack to begin else you won't have enough/big enough range of cards.

There are different sets of cards as they bring out a new one every so often. I am unfortunately not up enough to know which one is the current top. I would assume it would be pokemon platinum/ diamond and pearl as that is the most recently released game on nintendo ds. It would be worth seeing if you ds could check with his friends to see which they are playing (or see if the parents know).

Maybe something like [http://www.amazon.co.uk/POKEMON-PLATINUM-FLOURISH-THEM-DECK/dp/B001S9XEBO/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=toys &qid=1239302558&sr=8-7 here]]

basically think of it a bit like top trumps.

I.e. the cards have to outdo each other in score

dp says look for the words 'platinum' and 'deck' They prob also contain a basic ruleset and hints and tips for playing. (he also winced at the description of being kinda like top trumps )

booster packs contain very few cards and are for adding for a deck rather than starting with.

They are evil things - try to keep away from them if at all possible! Both DS's love them and they are all over my house, they get everywhere

Yes the latest cards out are 'platinum'. You can get a platinum starter set in Toys R Us as well as numerous pokemon toys/games etc. My DD has only just started to get into it so I'm not an expert and have absolutely no idea how to play the card game! (You can also get pokemon dvds on offer in toys r us just now)

Thanks guys. Think it's a little clearer now. Thankfully my ds is totally not in to these things at the moment (long may it last) so i will live in my la la land that he will love vintage mickey mouse and donald duck forever .

Off to trowl t'internet for decks and starter packs of diamond/pearl things - you never know, the dh may get a hint . See, off I go to la la land again.
