minging ?? adj. Brit. informal 1 foul-smelling. 2 very bad or unpleasant.

  • ORIGIN C20: perh. from Scots dial. ming 'excrement'.

From 'New words in the OED' link on the web.

I'm Scottish and have always used it but it seems quite new in mainstream English (?).

Been used very commonly in NI (my 'home') for as long as I can remember. Was surprised when I moved here that no-one had heard it before!

marthamoo · 15/04/2005 20:40

I can't remember when I first heard it but I reckon it came back into common parlance when Jade Goody was in Big Brother - she said it all the time.

expatinscotland · 15/04/2005 20:43

Very common in Scotland.

paolosgirl · 15/04/2005 20:49

Yep - used a lot up here. Say it quickly and leave off the end "g" for best effect

Thank you
