I think B's lessons are quite different. It's one big pool, and ATM her lessons are in the shallow end, with a rope sectioning off their corner so they don't stray too far. Last week they had to jump in the pool with a float at the 1.5m marker and swim back up to the shallow end. I think that was the last thing she had to complete before being moved up a level. She's nowhere near being able to swim in the deep end without a float, can do about 5M, but I guess the jumping in was to gauge their general confidence. I was absolutely amazed she did it TBH. She just loves loves loves her lessons

Well done for talking to the other mother - bet it drove her mad

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/06/2009 15:00

well done hippi !!
Good luck to B at new swimming class !

How did B get on at swimming? It is great she loves her lessons so much!
At Woking the lessons are in the Teaching Pool (max depth I think 1.1m). From age 5 there are 4 levels, beginners 1 and 2, improvers 1 and 2. E is now in improvers 2.
Once the children cam swim the whole length of the teaching pool (16metres) in front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke without stopping and in good technique they move to the main pool which is 1.5m to 3m deep. They immediately have to swim all the way to the 3m deep end. But she won't move up to the deep pool until next Spring I think because apparently improvers 1 and 2 each take about 3 terms to complete and she is only in her first term in improvers 2.
So it seems a completely different set up to B's lessons.

What are you both up to today? I am about to put on a load of laundry, wash the breakfast dishes, take the dog for a walk, pack O and dh's bags for their sleepover on HMS Belfast tonight and then zoom off to O's school to do Toe by Toe. Have not done that for ages because of invigilating so am looking forward to seeing 'my' readers again Then O has a swimming lesson before rushing home, a quick dinner and then I need to drop them at the station for the train to Waterloo

Tomorrow E and I are helping at teh school fair in teh afternoon before collecting O and dh from the station early evening.

Aaaaah, am looking forward to a weekend where we don't need to do anything!!

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/06/2009 10:32

Waterloo ? did I miss something ?
Have been up since 5 as T is off on his French trip today...it feels as though it's lunch time already !
Am going to do some work soon, might have a wee rest, got to go to town and then pick up S to mind for short time. T not back until about 10pm !
Have ordered espresso maker/chairs,clock and desk lamp for new studio !!

Hotcrossbunny · 19/06/2009 11:30

Morning

Wow! Dh would love to sleep on HMS Belfast. How exciting Are O and dh looking forward to it?

New studio MAS??? Had forgotten about the french trip - it's all go for the boys this weekend.

I've been in school this morning helping one of the reception teachers collate paperwork for the new intake. She is one of the sweetest kindest people, hugely uncomfortable with adults, so we had a good time. two other mums were there, so lots of chatting and cups of tea

Tomorrow we're off to see friends who are expecting their first baby. She's due in a couple of weeks, so she'll be enormous! Measurements suggest a 10lb baby Haven't seen them for ages, so it'll be lovely.

Then Sunday I might get to see my sister briefly. She's coming down to London for a course Mon/Tues, so if her boss hasn't made plans for them, we'll try to meet for lunch. Am excited

hippipotamiHasLost37Pounds · 19/06/2009 11:40

Awww lovely, a friend with an imminent new baby.... those tiny toes....

New Studio MAS? You kept that one quiet!!

Waterloo because of the Cubs trip to HMS Belfast. Dh is going as a helper.
They are taking the train from Brookwood to Waterloo tonight, walk to the London Eye for a 8.30pm 'flight', then walk to HMS Belfast where they will sleep for the night. The following day is an educational talk about the ship complete with a tour of the ship and free exploration time. Then after lunch (fish and chips on the banks of the River Thames) they are taking a boat back to Waterloo and then the train back to Brookwood.
Yes, they are very very much looking forward to it!!

And I bet T is having a FAB time in France!! And will he bring you back some salad servers?

Have just come back from a long dogwalk - my feet are now killing me!

Off to have a cup of coffee

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/06/2009 12:06

wow ! what a brilliant trip !! O will have a fab time I'm sure
Hope you do get to see your sis Hotcross - lovely !
Salad servers !! I'll be very surprised if T has actually spent any money, despite having 20 euros ! he might buy some choc at the chocolate factory I suppose
I'm sure I mentioned the studio - it's been an ongoing battle with planning etc (built at end of my parents garden and a door opening into mine -a space for me and my dad to work ) It's finished now and looks beautiful...will send some pictures...mum's garden will need a bit of TLC to repair the poor mangled grass !

OP posts:
hippipotamiHasLost37Pounds · 19/06/2009 15:44

Ahhh, yes, you mentioned the studio in your dad's garden, I did not realise it was yours aswell! How brilliant

Am just grabbing a quick cup of tea before heading off to take O to swimming.
Dh has been called to Fleet for a meeting, so fingers crossed he will be back in time for the train tonight.

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/06/2009 21:50

T back safely - had a great time, lots of films on his movie camera..he spent 5 euros on chocolate, that's it - he is totally hopeless !

OP posts:
hippipotamiHasLost37Pounds · 19/06/2009 22:33

O love him - I love the fact he brought his camera to film the trip

Love the fact he spent 5 euros on chocolate - O would have spent every single penny (on chocolate no doubt too

E and I waved O and dh off at the station at 7.15pm. Dh just rang 10 minutes ago, they had just got to the ship after a fab trip on the London Eye. They were making their way down the ship to the sleeping quarters...

E is in my bed for the night. She went up there with two Dutch books which she was trying to read out loud. She does not appear to want me to teach her Dutch but is trying to teach herself (and knowing E she will manage it too)

I have a headache so am going to go up to bed now.

Back tomorrow

hippipotamiHasLost40Pounds · 22/06/2009 08:10

Good mornign both of you

Just popping in quickly before rushing off to work for my last day of this school year. I will miss it

O had a fab time on HMS Belfast, will email some pictures later. He had £10 to spend in the gift shop and bought a huge bar of fudge, a huge bar of chocolate, a notepad and pencil with the HMS Belfast logo on for E and a Scouts HMS Belfast badge for his Scout blanket So definately a big spender when compared to T

Hope you both had a good weekend.

Have a nice day today, MAS I'll be thinking of you today, hope it all goes well.

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/06/2009 09:55

Am so glad that O had such a fab time - at his spending his money - that's what I like to see !! T does get through £££ buying stuff on iTunes - he has no qualms about that
Sorry that it's the end of your work this term - it's so good that you enjoy it so much though.
Radiotherapy is delayed by one day - so starts tomorrow - was very confused by hospital last week, but think I know what's happening now..am a bit worried that transport might turn up today if they haven't told them... my appointment tomorrow is scheduled for 4 something but apparently transport is the same time, around 11.30 every day throughout my treatment - the radiotherapy gets fitted in with the transport - so I should get slotted in and then taken home again more or less at expected time...I hate it if things aren't written down though - am a great one for rules and schedules
Book group tomorrow too - it was to be at mine which was fine but one of us can't make it as her dh is working,so we have agreed to go to hers..I've offeed to bring the wine and crisps as I'd already bought everything.
Hope you had a good w/end too Hotcross and that you saw your sis.
We just mooched about, I wandered into town, we had a barbecue on Saturday evening and bought some plants yesterday..nice and relaxing. Am now off to do work !

Hotcrossbunny · 22/06/2009 13:36

Glad the boys had lovely excursions. They were lucky with the weather too

We went past HMS Belfast yesterday and I thought of O and dh sleeping there. Lucky things!

I've had a madly busy weekend, and am suffering a bit today The world is going up and down and I should be cleaning, but am in a bit of a heap instead.

It was lovely seeing our pregnant friends on Saturday! B was beautifully glowy and excited and I was quite envious . They're sorting out the nursery ATM, all yellow as they don't know the baby's sex, and it's brought back so many lovely memories It's a very very special time for a couple. We went for a walk and had an ice cream in the park, so it was all very chilled and easy.

Sunday was more hectic. We did manage to see dsis, but it was hard with her boss there TBH, so we only spent about 45 minutes with them. We had a lovely time hopping on and off boats up and down the Thames though. B thought it was wonderful when she kept getting spray on her face We also had a potter round Tate Modern and B made a hat! All in all a lovely w/e

MAS - I'm sure it'll all work out fine tomorrow. They must be used to people coming in at different times, infact I sometimes turn up a bit early and am seen almost instantly. It's so nice not having to drive yourself and worry about parking and things. Do you have a good book ready??? Waht are you reading for bookgroup?

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/06/2009 14:39

your weekend sounds busily nice too Hotcross - though shame about not seeing more of your sis.
I will take Notes from an Exhibition which is the book group book - it's my second reading, really to remind me of the story - though I think I might take a few notes I printed off too and my copy of the webchat with Patrick Gale as I'm kind of leading the discussion ! I haven't had time really to prepare anything more so I hope it will be ok...

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 23/06/2009 15:59

hello - am back from radiotherpay...off at 11.30 and home by about 2.45...was ok,feels a bit odd,not physically but odd as in bloody hell I'm in an oncology unit having radiotherapy !

OP posts:
hippipotamiHasLost40Pounds · 23/06/2009 17:12

Aw MAS, it is sinking in now...

Glad to hear the transport was fine though, and had you home speedily too!!

Just think, first one done, cross it off the list!

Did you get a chance to read your book?

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/06/2009 17:58

yes I did finish the bits I wanted to read in the car going...I just get unnerved at not knowing exactly when I'm going and how long a wait it'll be that end..there seemed to be a bit of a delay today but all being well I should be home in time for T - if I'm not then he knows to go to his grandparents.

OP posts:
hippipotamiHasLost40Pounds · 23/06/2009 18:07

It is nice that you have the arrangement with your parents in place - that at least is something you don't need to worry about.

How is T dealing with this?

When my friend was going through it (mastectomy, chemo, radio, re-constructive surgery) she kept it from her children (then 9 and 6)entirely. Apparently opinions are divided over whether this is the right thing to do - but of course she had to do what felt right for her and her family.

On a different note, I have been asked to accompany E's class to Wisley Gardens next Wednesday. Should be fun

Oh and hotrocss - I put a polite little note about E's reading in her reading diary. Glad I did. The teacher told me after school she thought she had moved E onto Lime books in May. No-one had thought to tell E adn she continued to bring home White books. The teacher herself did not realise when reading with E that she was still on White. ()
Anyway, all is well, E had a lime book tonight and read it fluently, faultlessy and with great expression

Hotcrossbunny · 23/06/2009 22:33

One down... Well done MAS!

Am just flying by on way to bed. Tutoring in the morning, and am not ready. Eek!

Yay about the reading Hippi! I think sometimes the better readers can escape through the net a bit. B certainly is just being allowed to potter on at her own pace, not much individual instruction going on. Although, was pleased the hear she was doing 'i' words today (pie, nice, light etc) which sounded a bit more like it.

Have signed B's life away at ballet tonight. She's doing the exam in November, so will do 2 lessons a week next half term to prepare. I really hope she enjoys it, and isn't put off

Right, bed. Will be back in the morning if I survive tutoring

hippipotamiHasLost40Pounds · 24/06/2009 08:04

Oooh, how exciting about the exam hotcross!! What a little star B is

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/06/2009 10:10

excellent news about B 's ballet exam Hotcross - clever girl !
And thank you so much for your text yesterday - I only looked at my phone again this morning and saw it
That is good to have sorted out E's reading too hippi - bless her.
No radio. for me today - they rang to say that my machine isn't well.
T is dealing well with it all - he has picked up on what's going on- I didn't take him aside and tell him exactly, he has just gathered stuff together. I suppose perhaps I should have explained from the start but for some reason we didn't do that. It might have been because it was all very uncertain at first, you just get to know in steps after each test/proceedure - perhaps I just didn't want to say the word cancer to scare him. I know that he'd say something or ask if he was anxious. I am behaving quite matter of factly and doing all my normal stuff and have told him about the radiotherapy.

OP posts:
hippipotamiHasLost40Pounds · 24/06/2009 12:51

Matter of fact sounds the way to go
Sorry to hear today's session is cancelled - but it must be nice to have an un-expected free day

Have just come back from the market in Woking. Decided to cycle there along the towpath. Great fun, beautiful scenery, but am exhausted now!! (and aching in places I never knew it was possible to ache)
It took 45 minutes each way, plus an hour or so walking around town.

But fun, will definately make that my regular way into Woking!!

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/06/2009 14:08

wow ! am impressed by the cycling

OP posts:
Hotcrossbunny · 24/06/2009 14:29

Hi

What a pain about the radio - you must have been all psyched up for it, but at least you have a day off in the lovely sunshine I think practical and honest is the way to go with T. He'll ask questions if he wants more info...

Am in awe of the cycling Hippi. You are a star! How lovely to cycle along the towpath - bet you see lovely wildlife

Survived tutoring this morning. Am still not really enjoying it TBH, but M is a cutie, and we had some fun. He is very very bright, and interested in scientific stuff. He will sail through at school if he continues like this... I'm still struggling to keep him interested and happy, but still learning, but perhaps I'm having too high expectations of myself and what can be achieved in an hour His mum seems happy...

Am off back into the garden before pick up. Mustn't get caught up in Wimbledon again

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/06/2009 08:21

Hotcross - you are probably being a little harsh on yourself - you seem to be a bit of a perfectionist and very conscientious, both excellent qualities in my book, but it makes it very hard for you.
Well, I'm assuming I'm off to radiotherapy today...
