Caught speeding - Is this right

My cousin has been caught for doing 3 mph over the speed limit. He has been given 3 points and a £60 fine. Since then I have been told that it is 7 mph over the limit before a fine/ban is incurred. Does anyone know if thats true or is my cousin pulling a fast one (pardon the pun) and has exceeded the speed more than he says.

I think sometimes if you are only slightly over the limit you are allowed to go on a course and forfit the points.

As a rule though if you are over the limit, you are over the limit and must accept the fine and points.

Must admit I got a similar fine for 45 in a 40mph zone and got the points and the fine. Didn't have time to fight it at the time.

I always thought it was if you were caught doing 10% or more over the speed limit so if he was doing 33 in a 30 zone that would fit
But tbh speed limits are speed limits for a reason.

I always thought there was a 10% margin, as like everything your speedometer in your car can read slighty off
just like scales, which can be 1 lb or 2 (or 4/5 she wishes) out

The 'allowance' is 10% + 1 so you'd have to be doing 35, 46, 57, 68 and 79 before you were done as it were.

My friend got caught last week doing 34 in a 30 zone.

He was offered to either pay the £60 fine and have the 3 points on his license or he could pay £85 and go on a course for the day and not have the points.

I was very surprised at this as when I worked for the police authority you had to be doing 35 in a 30 zone to incur fine/points.

Thats strange you should say that about the course. He has been told that the fine is £60 and three points but if he attends a course which costs £67 he won't have the points put on the licence. I thought it was far fetched until I read the other posts.

There used to be an allowance because speedometers were not calibrated. These days they are all calibrated, and so there is no allowance. Most car speedos actually say you are doing 30 when if you use GPS you will find you are really only doing 27. So you really have to be speeding to be caught for speeding IYSWIM.

The "allowance you are talking about are the ACOP guidelines 10%+3 for a given speed limit
so in a 30 you will possibly have no action upto 36 mph.

Some forces a driver awareness course if you are slightly over I am doing one on the 5th
March 37 in a 30. but with cost me £91.

Police traffic cars do have calibrated speedos.

Sounds like the op cousin is a little hard done by IMO

ok, to sum up the cameras are calibrated at a certain speed dependant on county but when you get caught by an actual alien space gun they are calibrated correctly and you can get done at 34.

Tamarto. Don't disagree at all with speeding fines. Not for one jot.

The reason I'd have fought it is that the signage in that partic area is appalling. It was on the way to someone in the ocuntr, hadn't been before and having been done I then watched out on subsequent trips and realised that within about 2 miles it went back and forth between 60, 40, 30, 50 etc. I don't try and break the law, have no reason to, but you have to make it clear what the law is.

I've just done a speedchoice course. Was caught doing 37 in a 30 zone so totally my own fault.

Could either pay a £60 fine and get 3 points or do a 3 hour course for £60 and no fine.

I did the course and am being v careful about my speed.

I got caught doing 48mph in a 40 (they had only just changed it -no excuse) and i was ordered to pay £60 and have 3pts on my licence, no either or. My FIL got done the same place a few weeks later and had the same and he was doing 59mph
