... last question before I go to bed, as I was reading about No country for old men...
Penthe, is it similar to A simple Plan?

Night!

beforesunrise · 23/02/2009 08:10

Bucharest · 23/02/2009 08:20

Help!!!!!
Will go back and read other pages in a mo, but can someone who can write proper Italian (instead of my bad phonetic Italian) tell me how to turn down a job (the irony!)

I need to do the bidone on one of these scuola media projects, and basically, need to say in "job-turning down language" the following....

"Bla bla, I'm afraid that due to already having accepted a job last week (before your call) at another school, and now discovering that the projects will be on the same day, I unfortunately, tragically, with tears in my eyes and my hair shirt firmly on, bla bla...need to turn down your kind, generous offer.....sincere apologies, hope you can find someone else, sorry for short notice etc etc....."

Eeeek.

Bucharest · 23/02/2009 08:27

Caught up now....had no idea who Marco Thing was, until saw it on news yesterday.....dp more convinced than ever though that Maria is not, and never has been, a woman.

Dd loves mortadella (and wurstel, cold) both make me boak.

BS- will also go and look at the weaning thread.....if it's any consolation, mine was being perrrrrfectly weaned till about 8mths, then I swear she didn't eat more than a teaspoon a day for about the next...er...2 yrs......

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 09:44

Sorry Bucharest cannot help you with the letter, as my formal written italian is nonexistent....hopefully others can help.

ds back at school which mean i can potter and gaze at dd.

coram fields would be great, hopefully the weathe will be better next month.

do any of you know elena ferrante - apparently she wrote l'amore molesto and is pretty famous..franca do you know her?

lol at hairdo!!!!! apparently the real jb complained that he didn't get 1 shag when he had that haircut. is it violent No country for old men ,is it based on a book?

Bucharest · 23/02/2009 09:49

I think it's a Cormac McCarthy isn't it? One of the teachers I worked with last year, raved about it all summer.....

Think have decided which school to bidone....just rang the first one, and it's just one afternoon a week, which means dd would only miss one afternoon of her beloved nursery and not her fave afternoons (musica ad canto) either, whereas the other one is 2 afternoons and she'd miss musica one day...(apart from me having to find someone to have her....) Cannot quite believe am turning down money after not having any for so flippin long..ah well....

Could really do with a bit of Italian letter skills though...where are Franca and Brangelina this sunny morning?

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 09:55

egregio signore?
do letters still start like that?

he is the guy who wrote The Road, no? I had an anxiety attack when i read what it was about..

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 23/02/2009 10:08

pippi, just booked for the 30 as I have a hosp apt on 31. not sure how it'll work as I have Passport apt at 9.12 and AIRE apt at 11.24!!!

francagoestohollywood · 23/02/2009 10:11

Yes, it was by Cormac Mc Carthy. I actually made the big mistake to read The Road, with the same curiosity that usually compels me to watch horror movies (or movies like the day after)... since then I haven't been able to throw away things like old giacconi, just in case ...

Bucharest, I'd love to help, but be warned that I've never written a formal letter, not even when I was working, as I had to write "lettere simpatiche" then, in the way it is requested by the "friendly" ( ) mondo della moda...

Egregio Signore,

You need Brangelina!

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 23/02/2009 10:12

Bucharest, this could help?

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 23/02/2009 10:13

x-post, basically what franca said

Bucharest · 23/02/2009 10:30

How is this? Can someone give the grammar a quick looky...

Oggetto: PON (Inglese)

Is that OK?

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 10:38

Innanzitutto,no?
the rest seems fine to me, but wait fo sun and fran!

Bucharest · 23/02/2009 10:39

LOL- I'm hopeless with double consonants, I neither hear them, or seemingly write them!

Penthesileia · 23/02/2009 10:42

Holy crap: I just read the synopsis of The Road on Wikipedia! NO WAY could I read that in my current hormonal state! I found RR bad enough! Argh, it's freaking me out just thinking about it. Arrrrggghhh.

Do you mean Blood Simple, franca? I haven't seen it.

NCFOM is violent - but more shockingly so, than horrifyingly, IYSWIM. But the central performances are terrific.

Am no help AT ALL with writing in Italian. Sorry!

Penthesileia · 23/02/2009 10:45

Durrrrgh: just looked up A Simple Plan and seen that it is a film (I thought it might be how Blood Simple translates into Italian ). Sorry! Yes, plot sounds vaguely similar, in that the main character finds a million dollars; but it is more a of "chase" film, as Javier Bardem's character hunts him down to retrieve it. Scary. Brilliantly tense at points. And Tommy Lee Jones does the ageing, moral sheriff thing fabulously. Actually, I think I will buy it on DVD today to watch tonight. And There Will Be Blood, another fave from last year.

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 10:57

uuu, will put it on my lovefilm list!

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 11:02

The Road seems to me a draining read. How did you manage it Franca, were in a state of constant anxiety? Did you start panicking about little things? The movie is with Viggo Mortensen (sexi). but I doubt he will be showing his sexiness in it. I may have to become Viggo at some point, another mumsnet guise for me.

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 11:03

lol at blood simple and simple plan being the same title, totally plausible.

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 11:03

infact surprised that a simple plan is not a coen movie.

javierbardem · 23/02/2009 11:05

and now have to puree a potato, apple and avocado for la cicciona, a piu tardi. [domestic goddess emoticon>

francagoestohollywood · 23/02/2009 11:37

potato, apple, and avocado? what a weird concoction...

A simple plan is by Sam Raimi, if I remember well.

I've heard they are making a movie of The Road, is it going to be with Viggo Mortensen? God I love him. Did you watch A history of Violence? I liked it a lot (while dh didn't). I haven't seen Eastern promises though.

Bucharest, the letter is perfect. the only tiny typo is "questa eventualita' (not questo). Go woman!!!!!!!!!

francagoestohollywood · 23/02/2009 11:39

A history of violence is probably the only cronenberg's movie I really liked

Bucharest · 23/02/2009 11:45

Thanks all, have sent email (after feckin electricity going 3 x while I sit there typing!) I spoke to a secretary on the phone who was quite understanding....Dp kept saying "wait until the last minute, think about it, what do you care, qua siamo in Italia" but I just don't sleep if I think I'm letting someone down....and anyway, if the course is beginning next week, it blimmin well is the last minute for them!

Viggo unfortunately is huge disappointment when not in LOTR hairy mucky scruffy mode.....a role I doubt we'll see him in again. After spending all those years forlornly wailing "Aragorn, oh Aragorn" in my sleep, to then see him running through a tunnel with blonde hair and Sylvester Stallone brought me down to earth with a bumpety bump.

I;m off to reheat melanzane ripieni from yesterday....and to try and decide whether to a) bake carnevale cookies for nursery tomorrow. or b) send dp to pasticceria tonight.
Hmmmmm. That'll be b) then. Monday is not a day for sourcing ingredients.
