Ghosty> I always though Kiwi's said "ay" at the end of everything, not 'hey'. You learn something new every day and other cliches, 'hey'.

Libby65 · 08/04/2003 11:26

Ghosty there's a kiwi word that I can't stand(I'm SURE it's a kiwi word, at least I think it is).... "GROUSE". I hate it I hate it!!

rainbow · 08/04/2003 11:30

I am always switching letters. I am glad my son did that. At 4 in reception year he got in a mess with some glue."Miss I am in a bit of a mucking fuddle!" Oops!!!

Nutjob · 08/04/2003 11:32

Rainbow, you have hit a bit of a nerve with me here. My ds loves watching Nick Jr and Playhouse Disney, and because a lot of the programmes on it are American he seems to have picked up a lot of Americanisms along the way!! I am forever correcting him for saying 'cookies' instead of 'biscuits' and the other day he asked me if he could go to the 'movies'. Aaarrgghhh!!!

rainbow · 08/04/2003 11:42

I am glad I'm not the only one Nutjob

It bugs the life out of me! especially when they then say they speak English!!

Ghosty · 08/04/2003 11:47

Bobbins ... it is 'ay', you are right but I think they mean 'hey' as they don't say their h's ... spot the Brit in NZ!!!!
On the subject of accents ... all the kiwis think that DS's accent is really sweet ... I have to stop myself from pointing out that THEY have the accent NOT DS
Oh and DS has a friend at Kindergarten called Jack ... DS says, 'No Mummy, it is not Jack it is JECK!' DH says I am losing an uphill battle ..... AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHH!

rainbow · 08/04/2003 11:50

Definitely and uphill battle!! Did you not realise that depite the fact he is only 3, he knows everything? Really Ghosty

rainbow · 08/04/2003 11:51

OOps an not and!!

Ghosty · 08/04/2003 11:56

On the subject of things people say that make you want to go aaaaghhh... I had an HV who used to say things like, 'And how is Mum doing?' and 'Baby needs to feed more' .... I wanted to poke her eyes out ... I, and DS, did and do have names you know ................

Ghosty · 08/04/2003 11:57

Yup rainbow ... he knows everything ... yesterday I said, 'Look, there's a mixing lorry!' and he said, 'No mummy it is not a mixing lorry, it is a cement mixer ... '

rainbow · 08/04/2003 12:04

My Mum took DS1 swimming, on the way back they walked passed a cemetary and the conversation turned to death (nice eh??) A couple of days later we drove passed another cemetary while a burial was going on and again the subject turned to death(!)
"When you die what do you want to do with your body?" asks DS1
"Cremated" I replied
"Oh! Grandma doesn't she wants to be burnt!"

Ghosty · 08/04/2003 12:10

...
Off to night night now ... see you later ... zzzzz

rainbow · 08/04/2003 12:13

Sweet Dreams Ghosty and good luck!

slug · 08/04/2003 13:09

Ghosty, there's an explanation for the Kiwi Ay at the end of sentences. Every word in the Maori language ends in a vowel. So if you have a sentence that ends in a consonant it just dosen't sound right to our ears, hence the "Ay" at the end.

Nutjob · 08/04/2003 13:55

Ghosty - You saying your ds calls his friend 'Jeck' instead of 'Jack', reminds me of another instance of my ds speaking American. We were watching Little Bill' together and I said 'Oh, there's his brother Bobby' and ds pipes up 'No Mummy - it's Barbie'

Ghosty · 08/04/2003 20:44

Ah Slug, thanks for that ... that explains why it seems to be maori and islanders that say it most ... you are a kiwi aren't you? Do you live in NZ? Would love a mumsnet mate here ...

Sabbath · 08/04/2003 22:16

Whenever I have moved house my dm has always says ' It has great potential' it is like she is a interior designer or something, it just makes me mad!!

Eulalia · 09/04/2003 23:12

To me a floor is something that can only be in a house.

The ground is something that is outside.

Sabbath · 12/04/2003 23:28

I hate it when your kids ask 'WHY' and yhou have to explain about ten times.

whymummy · 13/04/2003 08:50

is it the wrong time of the month??asked by dh who will loose all his teeth next time he asks!!
he`s got your spanish temper! said by my MIL everytime my son had a tamtrum, she has no teeth to loose so i will go for her hair

CatM · 13/04/2003 09:41

I love my MIL but ... every time she comes for a visit she asks me when we will move back. She never asks my DH however. After 3 years of being in London this habit of hers is getting old. In between trips she sends cards saying how much she misses us or DH.

We are weeks away from having a baby and I am preparing myself for a new onslaught. ARRGH!

suedonim · 13/04/2003 10:14

The most annoying sentence in the world is "What's for dinner?" closely followed by "Is dinner ready, yet?" and "Are we there, yet?"

And I hate "hubby" and especially "kids" as invoked by T Blair. Shudder! We're people, not goats.

Tinker · 13/04/2003 11:01

Current hate is 'roadmap' as used by anyone involved in Iraq.

At the risk of being extremely unpopular, hate 'dh/dp' etc Reminds me of 'hubby'. Yes. I know why people use them but.......

....

Furball · 13/04/2003 11:12

suedonim - Thats why my mum is called granny rather than nanny!!

OP posts:
suedonim · 13/04/2003 17:29

LOL, Furball - I actually hadn't made that connection, d'oh!!!
