Gizmo, my DH always uses "talk to the hand.." I think he actually thinks it is witty. Argh!
I used to work for a boss who when he gave me some work would say "Could you turn this around as soon as possible please".
"turn this around" what on earth is that all about?

Metrobaby · 04/04/2003 10:45

It really jars me when you have your first ds/dd, within 2 mnths of the birth, people normally ask "So when are you having No2 then ??"

Also when I was made redundant last yr, lots of people used to say - "Oh how nice - you can stay at home now and complete your family"

shelleyb · 04/04/2003 11:02

and I go mental when people say "I suppose you'll try for a girl now" as if having two boys doesn't quite make us a complete family.

donnie · 04/04/2003 11:42

'normalcy' instead of normality makes me cringe. Also the expression 'factor in' makes me want to retch violently before committing an act of violence against the speaker. And 'when all is said and done' is a killer. What about the way some people pepper their conversation with 'like' ? that is also annoying. The other one that drives me nuts is 'step up a gear' when describing something - eg the war in Iraq- intensifying. I'd better go and smash some plates now !

Bobbins · 04/04/2003 12:01

Whenever someone says 'at the end of the day'... instantly 'it's nightime' pops into my head. That's annoying in itself.

I once had a boss eho used to say 'are we bright eyed and bushy tailed'. I call that harrassment!

A friend of mine calls my ex 'the cheeseheading mincer' I love that.

When I was pregnant and sick of people saying 'any day now'...'my you're big'...'how much longer?' I used to feign ignorance and ask them what they were talking about.

I find it funny that whenever people phone they always say "it's only me" I sometimes reply "hello, only you"

Do you know what I mean? (I am so guilty of using that expression)

Bobbins · 04/04/2003 12:02

'friendly' fire!

people who want to cover up a nasty comment or say something your not gonna like by saying -I'm not being funny but.....I used to work with someone how said it all the time.AAAAARRRRGGGGGG.

Libby65 · 04/04/2003 12:54

I hate the term 'supermodel'... it's very annoying. Also get extremely irritated by marketing firms who call me at home and say "And how are you this evening?" Like they really care - they just want to sell me something. GRRR!!

hestor · 04/04/2003 15:00

People who say"oh well nevermind"in a sort of resigned way after I've been having a good old moan about something that's important to me.

Tigger2 · 04/04/2003 15:08

We have people who live in the house past our farm road end, and are the ultimate in "dae yer heid in" the arrived from near Conrwal just over a year ago. Anyway they have had the need to phone me recently because some of our sheep kept getting out, and the message on the answer machine was - "hi its from up the road, some of your sheep are adjacent to the property!!!" Now in our area it normally is "aye its dae ye ken that some o yer yowes (farm pronunciation) are on the rod (road) in front o ma hoose. Adjacent to the property, after I had stopped laughing and DH had stopped swearing in a completely incoherent fashion, we did get the sheep back!

Another one we here when a man refers to his wife as "the wife" oh I do think that castration is required if my DH ever called me that.

batey · 04/04/2003 17:58

My naffing dh.....long irritating boring story!!!

Jimjams · 04/04/2003 19:14

"hearts and minds"

tallulah · 04/04/2003 19:17

My DD (17) says "like", as in, "we were, like, all going to the pub and Rob, like,..." AAARRGGHH! It really p*s her off though when I interrupt with "like what?" (Her father shouts at her "speak ENGLISH!"

People who say would of, when they mean had, like "I wish I would of got that car"

My MIL saying to my DD (then 2) "you isn't eatin nuffink" cringe.

Lara2 · 04/04/2003 20:18

How about 'ain't' 'dun' and 'bin'; as in haven't, done and been?? HATE them!!!!

Also menu descriptions - are these the new estate agents' details now they have been curbed by the law to be truthful? 'Jus' - gravy in anyone else's book, or sauce. 'Nestled', as in '..... nestled on a bed of pasta.' I've also seen 'sunggled'!!!!! Pretentious? Moi?

Lara2 · 04/04/2003 20:19

Of course that last one should be 'sNuggled'!! DOH!

Chinchilla · 04/04/2003 20:34

My mum - she keeps telling me that I am going to have to develop a 'thick skin' about ds, because he is going to come up against children who might push him etc. Ok, so I don't want him hanging on to me all day, but I don't want him hurt either. I want him to know that he can come to me for cuddles if he is ever hurt or unsure about anything. Bloody woman, she makes me feel like I am going to make my son into a sissy, when all I am trying to do is give him the confidence to go out into the world and experience things.I want him to know that I will always be there as a back up.

PamT · 04/04/2003 20:47

'My wife/girlfriend' becomes 'our lass' (pronounced 'ah lass' around here) really bugs me. I prefer 'her who must be obeyed'

Lindy · 04/04/2003 20:50

I also hate 'been there, done that, got the T-shirt' (or whatever the correct saying is) - I always feel like saying pompously 'well, why aren't you wearing it then?'

Great thread BTW (am I allowed to say that?)

Chiccadum · 04/04/2003 21:06

I personally think that the most horrible and demeaning word in the english language is SPASTIC, I personally hate the word and will not use it, it should be banned

GeorginaA · 04/04/2003 21:28

That reminds me, Chicca. I absolutely loathe the use of the word "gay" in the current slang context to be anything bad or stupid. Drives me nuts.

lou33 · 04/04/2003 21:54

Chiccadum I absolutely agree. It was bandied about a lot when I was a kid and I never felt comfortable about it then, but since I now have a 2 year old boy who is a spastic diplegia cp kid it really upsets me. Dh heard some builders using it the other day, when he was fishing, and it upset him so much he packed up and came home to see him instead.

snickers · 04/04/2003 22:08

Overuse of the word "actually" in sentences...

Did you know words like "thingy" and "wotsits" are called "metasyntactic variables"...

Very irritating. As I must be cause I am prone to use all the below words and phrases occasionally - but does it make me slightly less guilty KNOWING how annoying it is...

My latest annoying phrase (which annoys me, and DH) is saying "yeah no" when he asks me a question... DOH!

Angiel · 04/04/2003 22:50

I hate the word 'fondle', it makes be cringe. Dh has recently started saying "Wrap up" if something or someone is annoying him, which is really grating on my nerves.
