When was the term 'hun' invented?

I know this is a bit of a silly question to ask on here as mumsnetters on the whole are anti-hunning. But why is there a glut of huns. Everyone I know says it, writes it on Facebook etc. I never heard it till a year back. Is it American?

Short for hunny which I always presumed came from Honey - like my sweet etc.

Isn't it short for Honey?
