What time does your eleven/twelve year old go to bed???

I know these threads have been done before, but can't quite find the evidence I need!

My ds is in year 7 and feels very hard done to about bedtimes. I do think children getting enough sleep has a big impact on their school life, health, mood etc.

Equally, when I was that age I can't remember what time I went to bed as it was never an issue or source of argument, which I would like it not to be in our house.

The thing is now he's a bit bigger I'm not really sure how many hours sleep they actually need or what the average bedtime is (rather than what he tells me ALL his friends do)! He needs to get up about 7am

Anyone else got similar age children, what bedtimes work for you?

nine o clock. but then, he has to be up at six, and out the door by seven, or he misses his bus.
tbh, the year before, he could get away with sleeping later. nowadays, as long as he is in his room, quietly reading, i dont stress. he is usually sleeping by half nine at the latest.

DS 11 today goes up at 8.30pm, but generally doesn't sleep before 9.30/ 10pm ish

OneBoyOneGirl · 24/11/2008 21:46

my niece is 7 and my sister puts her to bed at 8.30 and then lets her read until 9 as far as i know

DS1 is 11 and goes to bed at 9. Seems to work fine and he gets up with no problems around 7/7.30 am.

controlfreakyagain · 24/11/2008 21:47

ds1 is 11.5. lights out 8.30 (he's up by 6.45 latest...

georgimama · 24/11/2008 21:47

I don't have a child of this age but I went to bed at about 9 or 9.30 at that age, certainly no later - was usually up at about 6.30. I was allowed to read until my mum went to bed at about 11 and if my light was still on then I was told to turn it off. I didn't read till that time every night but I was allowed to if I wanted.

My dd is in year 8. She goes to a high achieving school (so hardly a moment to call her own during the day and quite a bit of homework) and does lots of after school things. She is a very active person who likes to be busy all the time. Ideally she is in bed by 8.30, lights off at 9.00. This usually slips to 8.45/9.00 with lights off at 9.30. Except for Fridays, when she goes to Scouts then has supper with dp and me - grown up time without little brother - and goes to be at about 10,30. She gets up at 6.30, and has a long lie in on Sundays. I try to make sure she has at lead one early night a week. What time does your ds go?

modernart · 24/11/2008 21:50

9pm here too, for my 11 year olds. Although they often chatter until 9.30. It is usually nearer 10 pm at the weekends. Although any later than that and they get crotchety.

wiffey · 24/11/2008 21:51

DS is 11 & in bed for 8.30, lights out for 9.00 most nights; leter for scouts & weekends, It works most of the time & he's up about 7.00.

granarybeck · 24/11/2008 21:57

Seems like I'm not being too unreasonable then. He goes up at 8.30 and can read till 9, sometimes slips a bit. I think maybe I could start to be a bit more flexible about him being in bed but deciding within reason when his light goes off or maybe go up at 9.

DD is 12 and goes to bed at nine and usually asleep by 9.30. DD2 is 10 and is usually asleep by nine.

Suedonim · 24/11/2008 22:12

I count my blessings if dd is in bed by 9.30pm. She gets up at 5.40am. She's never needed much sleep.

granarybeck · 24/11/2008 22:13

Yes my dd is 10 and goes to bed just after 8ish and is usually asleep by 9. She does need a lot more sleep than ds though.

She has to get up then. She and dh leave for school/work at 6.20. We live abroad and the day starts early here. She's pretty shattered by the weekend.
