Is it just as it looks eg car-mine, or something else?

yep just like that I think

MadreInglese · 22/10/2008 11:25

Thanks, wasn't sure if the pronounciation was a bit more exotic

It's Italian, I believe, so should be pronounced: Car-mee-ney. But I think it's common (particularly in the US) to 'anglicise' it and pronounce it as Car-mine.

HTH.

Ah I see, thanks

Pronounced the Italian way it's rather beautiful, don't you think? It means song (I guess you know this already!) - from the Latin 'carmen'.

Hang on, though. You mean the name, right? As in that actor in CSI: New York? Cos there's a colour 'carmine' too (deep red), and that is pronounced 'Car-mine', I think. Hmmm - actually not sure about that one... [confused emoticon]

Yes, the CSI fella, LOL

DP I & were debating how to pronounce it after watching last night (very exciting lives you see!)

Carmine Red is also a food colouring, E120 iirc

I had no idea it was a name as well

Penthesileia · 22/10/2008 14:41

Actually, although the words are spelt the same, they come from different roots - Carmine (the name) from Latin 'carmen'; and carmine the colour is from Arabic (? I think...) for red, IIRC. [definitely needs to get out more emoticon]

The Italian name is pronounced Carmeeney - unless the Carmine I know mispronounces his name

Twiglett · 22/10/2008 18:18
