I simply can not find 2 of them anywhere. Have already extended the loan on them 3 times....

what now?

You pay for them. How much it costs depends on how old they are - the older the cheaper! If you go in they'll be able to tell you how much it would be.

The other thing is that you WILL find them approximately one hour after you've paid for them. That's what happened to me with sodding Sammy Snake at the seaside!!

I paid for a book once that I knew we hadn't returned but that I was unable to find. It was a childs book and was about £3.00. If I remember correctly that wasn't the price shown on the book (which was more £) but was a price that i assume was on the computer. hth.

I always find books just after I pay for them. If you keep the receipt they give the money back. I usually have them renewed four or five times before paying though. I ask if I can look just once more. A couple have never turned up but they usually do.

girlandboy · 16/10/2008 14:16

I work in a library and we will renew a book up to 9 times.
It will usually turn up when you're not looking for it.
The charges are a set charge eg. £11 for an adult hardback, £7 for a paperback.
We also take into account how old the book is when it is lost. If it's an old childrens picture book for instance, then you can either replace it yourself and bring it in, or even sometimes we just write it off.
Go and speak to the library to find out what the damage may be.
Also KEEP YOUR RECEIPT! If the book turns up then they will give you your money back.

....unless you are lucky enough to be in leicester - they are haveing a book amnesty 20th - 26th October 2008. If you have any fines, overdue or missing books, you can go to the library and wipe the slate clean!

girlandboy · 16/10/2008 14:21

Only in Leics CITY libraries, not the COUNTY libraries! I know, I work there!!!

grumpalumpa · 16/10/2008 14:26

ahhhhh - i bet you are going to be busy next week then!

DrNortherner · 16/10/2008 14:28

You wouldn't believe it. Some of the books we got last time were ancient! Been written off years ago. Dusty, yellowed and only fit for the bin really - mind you that's not the worst thing we find in books!!! Bacon rind springs to mind! And also, frighteningly, thick yellow toe nails!!!

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 17/10/2008 16:05

Just thank god you haven't lost a University library book. Some of the textbooks can cost over £70 per book, and we charge for the cost of the book plus a processing charge. Mean buggers aren't we?!

OrmIrian · 17/10/2008 16:13

You are lined up against a wall, blindfolded and shot! And so die all naughty careless people.

Well actually you just have to pay. Recently we 'lost' a book that DS#2 has supposedly borrowed. Kept renewing it so I could scour the house again and again. Had to fess up that we hadn't got it. Paid my 6.95 or whatever and forgot about it. About a month later I got a call telling me I could come and get my money back because someone else had returned the book . Little computer glitch apparently.
