Freelance editing work - what to charge - URGENT

My sister has landed some work doing freelance editing. The only problem is that she has been asked to name her price and doesn't really know what people who do this charge. She needs to give a quote soon so if any of you who do this kind of work could reply soon, that would be great.

Thanks

What sort of editing is it? Book? Magazine? What sort of circulation is the publication? A big publisher's or a small one? Day rates in consumer magazines go from about £75 day to £150 day.

I pay £130 a day for freelancers. Is she subbing/laying out also? If v technical she could charge more - would suggest an hourly rate of up ot £20.

Thanks guys, I'll ask her those questions and get back to you.

It's editing a report on a conference produced by an offshoot of the local council, so as to make it readable and interesting to the general public, not technical and no layout stuff. It's a graphic designer who's producing the report who's asked my sister to do the wordy bit.

As its a council and they won't have a clue, I would say to ask for £150 a day. That's a (very) good magazine editing rate. She can also exaggerate how long it will take. They can only say no if they want to haggle.

Ha! Spot the apostrophe error!

Thanks for your suggestions, I've let her know them but if anyone has any more pearls of wisdom, I'd be glad to hear them.

Hah! I posted on the other version of this thread. Agree with Aloha, charge as much as you think you could get away with. £150 a day would be good pay for the job but if they'll go for that (and I bet they will) then good on her. Newspapers/mags tend to be a bit meaner in my exp.

Its should be it's, aloha?? (Hope I'm right as I'm in this line of business too!)
Good luck, Hilary. I'll try and find out our rates as well.
We seem to have 2 threads going on the EN language, interesting innit?

Hilary · 26/02/2003 12:20

Yeah, sorry Clary, I put it in here, then it disappeared down the list without anyone answering so I put it in the worky thread as well to try to ensure that the right people saw it. Then they both started getting answers - whoops!

My sister says thank you to all of you for helping her find the right level to charge for her work. The fact that you were all saying similar rates of pay which corresponded with what she had found from other sources was really helpful and she has now set the price and is pretty pleased with it!
