Just thought I would start this thread, as my DH always take the mickey out of me for when I am hanging out my washing, I always have to have the same colour peg on the same item. I didn't
actually realise this until it was pointed out. Am I the only one who does things like this.

Am feeling quite good about myself on this thread - much better than the housekeeping ones where I always come out slovenly.

However, am a bit obsessive about packing (suitcases, car boot, fridge etc) and I really annoy everyone by correcting their use of less/fewer.

... and "it's" when it should be "its" - makes me scream every time I see one (which is increasing in frequency, even in the "quality" papers!).

Less and fewer also annoys me, while dh's bugbear is the misuse of "between" and "amongst".

I blame my mum, who was an English teacher. (Dh blames his mum, a primary school head teacher, too - but then he blames her for most things!)

I also have "my" (efficient) way of packing the dishwasher and have to move the items that dh puts in, so that more will fit in. Can't suggest to him that he changes the way he does it (I could explain the logic very easily) as he then gets stroppy.

I like to hang all the shirts together, then the T-shirts, t shirts, towels, then dh's undies, then my undies, then all ds's things (baby stuff looks so cute on the line!) and finally the socks.

PamT · 24/02/2003 11:25

When I go to the supermarket the shopping has to be put away in the right bags but I'm not sure how much is common sense and how much is obsession. All the fridge stuff goes together, all the bread in another bag and of course raw meat completely separate (though try telling some of the assistants why you want it separate!).

My grammar and spelling aren't brilliant but there/their, your/you're and 'would of' (would have) really irritate me when wrong.

berries · 24/02/2003 11:26

Janh - I think you're my dh is disguise

I LOATHE using the shampoo/handwash etc & finding he's topped up the last bit with water - YUK.

Also, to all those people who restack the dishwasher, don't ever complain when your dh refuses to do it. My dh insists I dont do it 'right', so now I leave it for him. He can't seem to grasp that when he's not here all the stuff gets clean anyway.
BTW he does all the washing as well, as he has the same problem with hanging it out - there are advantages to this!

I however, have no bad habits at all. Unless you count not using the knife in butter and marmalade (clean knife for each), always having to have matching kives & forks on the table etc. Actually, my only things are to do with cutlery - how wierd is that!

GillW · 24/02/2003 11:41

PamT - I do that with the supermarket shopping too. DH can't understand it at all, and just puts things in any old how, while I'll even arrange thing on the conveyor belt so they come out in the right order to fill the bags with "like" items.

elliott · 24/02/2003 11:46

ah, a 'wierd habit' I share! I arrange the supermarket packing logically - heavy stuff first, then light stuff on top (we have a large bag to put it all in). Cold stuff and fruit and veg separately.
I thought that was just common sense?? Though admit that I have now got to the point where I refuse the 'help' of packers - what is the point of providing them if they know nothing about how to pack?

PamT · 24/02/2003 11:46

GillW, yes I do the conveyor belt thing too and get really frustrated when the checkout lady doesn't take them off in the right order. I think most of it is just knowing that when you get home they will be easier to sort out and less damaged if you pack them all properly. I must admit to almost having a panic attack when I saw that the Scouts were having a fund raising day by packing people's shopping for them - I don't want other people doing my packing!!!

Philippat · 24/02/2003 12:07

Oh and 1980s/1980's. I really have a problem with those Best of The 80s (or more usually 80's unfortunately) album adverts.

GeorginaA · 24/02/2003 12:13

ks - the trick is a) not to overload the dryer and b) to take them out and fold/hang the second the dryer switches off - don't wait until later to do it. That way no creases ) If I've folded I then usually also put them in the airing cupboard over night to "finish them off". Not as "perfect" as ironing but "good enough" for most purposes. Gets rid of an evil chore anyway.

GeorginaA · 24/02/2003 12:19

That should have been a normal smiley... oops!

Crunchie · 24/02/2003 12:24

The supermarket conveyor belt thing!!! That is for me, I get upset when they don't do it in order too! I always sort things out before I go through, otherwise things take twice as long to unpack at home. Fortuneately I've got dh o do the same, since usually like is with like if he does the shopping now. It only took me 7 yrs of training.

Dishwasher stacking, I can see that one too, only I am not too bad on this. Tins in the cupboard, well I buy smart price ASDA stuff which all come in white cans with pictures, so I do arrange these so I can see the picture.

I have an issue with stacking, I stack my plastic boxes in size order to keep it neat, dh always chucks things in willy nilly!!!

Azzie · 24/02/2003 12:37

This thread is fascinating!

I'm less bad than I used to be - in our old house the light switches in the kitchen had to be left in matching positions (one double switch plate did the outside light and kitchen, the other double did the kitchen and work surface light, and both switches on a plate had to be down or both up). I always knew it didn't really matter, but if I left them 'odd' I couldn't settle until I went back and sorted them.

If I can tell the difference between the earrings in a pair, then the same one always has to go in the same ear. And I have to wear my rings the 'right' way round (even on my wedding ring you can tell from the hallmark). Again, I know it doesn't really matter, so it doesn't make any difference if I do it my way!

The one that really drives dh mad is that the duvet cover has to be the right way up and the right way round or I can't sleep under it - we had a duvet cover with thin stripes on one side and thick ones on the other, and to me the thick side was obviously the top (don't know why, but it was) and had to be on top.

And don't even mention lining up the remote controls for the TV etc in the correct order when not in use....

Frieda · 24/02/2003 12:39

Oooh, Breeze ? I hadn't thought of my neighbours possibly assuming I didn't wear knickers! Given that dh's and ds's are frequently on there, perhaps mine are conspicuous by their absence. Am now thinking I ought to go out and by a few pairs of senible ones which I never wear simply to rectify this apparant discrepency on the washing-line front/

Just thought of another one ? writing my supermarket shopping list in the order that the items appear in the supermarket. There's nothing worse than getting to the frozen food aisle and suddenly noticing "garlic" or "kholrabi" that should have gone into the trolley at the beginning of the trip.

JanZ, now you've got me thinking ? what is the difference between amongst and between? I probably make that mistake all the time. Also, is there any difference between among and amongst, while and whilst? (sorry for going off at a tangent ? should probably start a new thread entitled "proper use of grammar"

breeze · 24/02/2003 12:48

Wish I hadn't started this now and some replies are reminding me of others I have.

Azzie, I am totally with you on the duvet thing, I have to have the big stripes showing, it has even caused major rows when DH has gone to bed before me and has been woken up by me turning the duvet over, not what you need in the middle of winter.

As for the supermarket thing, I always sort into where in the cupboards they go, and all freezer stuff in one bag, but then saying that its only because I will put the freezer stuff away and then unpack later.

Oh and on the subject of pants, I don't hang my "period" pants out, they go on the radiator, and thanks soupdragon, today whilst hanging my clothes out I couldn't help bbut keep glancing at my neighbours washing, I hope I wasn't seen

OP posts:
Azzie · 24/02/2003 12:51

breeze,

We've had rows over the duvet for the same reason. I hold that he knows me well enough by now to make sure he sorts the duvet out to my satisfaction before he goes to sleep, so if I wake him by turning it it's his own fault!

elliott · 24/02/2003 12:55

'period pants'???!! How do you keep track?

JanZ · 24/02/2003 12:55

We can't start a thread on grammar just yet - my Mum's away on holiday (cyling in India!) for the next two weeks.

Between and among(st): you can only be "between" two things - any more and it has to be "amongst" (according to dh).

I have to say I'm not sure about the difference between among/amongst and while/whilst. I had always just thought it was a style thing, with maybe a throwback to the French type "liaison" requirements (or like putting an "n" onto "a" before a vowel, as in "an apple" ) ..... but I can't ring Mum and ask!

breeze · 24/02/2003 13:09

My period pants and what I call granny pants, while my others are much smaller.

I have never been good at speling or gramer, so hop I donnt cauuse offfense.

breeze · 24/02/2003 13:12

Azzie,

Exactly thats what I said to him as well, you should of heard us rucking when he tried to do me a favour and make the bed and I had the tag up my end. (sounds rude but YKWIM)

OP posts:
bayleaf · 24/02/2003 13:27

Corbin - just so you don't feel alone - I totally admit that it's c**p but I use the dryer loads - and just because I'm too lazy most of the time - well isn't using a dishwasher just as bad? I don't know the ins and outs of it but I admit to using both!
Yes GillW - same conveyor-belt habits here - we realy NEED to met up and compare in detail!

CAM · 24/02/2003 13:28

During the winter I don't hang washing outside but dry it on 2 racks in front of the aga overnight. I cannot mix up white and colours on the racks. I have to put white on one and colours on another, even if there's room left on one rack.
Why?

GeorginaA · 24/02/2003 13:38

Incidentally, dryer fans, if you feel the need to assuage your guilt a little bit, npower do a "green" electricity option that's endorsed by Greenpeace (so all electricity you use is from renewable sources). I know it's still not great to use all that extra energy but at least I know coal/oil isn't being burned or radioactive waste being generated just for me to avoid a little inconvenience... well that's my excuse anyway
