when my site appears in Google it just comes up as 'The Bus' (not really but the 'something' - I'm using bus as an example) :P

How do I change it to The Bus from JoolsToo Central - or somesuch.

I trawled the web for help but its all gobbledigook to me!

It's picking up the page title -- in the HTML between the tags.

Could it be that your web browser has just cached the old version?

Soprana · 30/09/2008 14:59

forgive obvious question but did you refresh your browser?

I changed it yesterday.

I use Front Page
viewed the file as an html
changed the wording
saved the file
closed the file
published

can I put anything in that title?

I've been reading up on meta tags but I don't understand it.

is there an idiot's guide?

OP posts:

Yes, pretty much.

Spiders are the automated Google tools that go out and index the web. It'll take them a while to pick up the changes to your page. So long as the title has changed on the online copy (look in your browser's title bar when you're on the page) then Google will reflect that eventually.

JoolsToo · 30/09/2008 15:21

erm 'online copy'

you're talking to a total dullard here when it comes to all things web related - how did the site in the first place is a mystery!

when I open a new tab, the title on that has changed.

when someone searches the site all that comes up is the title name but other sites have a more descriptive title, surely that's not the name of their page?

OK.

In your section, you need to add

PortAndLemon · 30/09/2008 15:27

There is probably an easy FrontPage way of doing that too...

JoolsToo · 30/09/2008 15:27

lol!

I'll give it a whirl!

JoolsToo · 30/09/2008 15:34

hello, dumbo is back!

in the 'user meta variable' box I typed a name and a description but it comes up with message

"to allow the name to be used in scripting language it must start with a letter or underscore and subsequent letters must be letters, digits or underscores"

OP posts:
PortAndLemon · 30/09/2008 16:11

You need to make the Name "description" (without the quotation marks). Then you can put whatever you like in the Value box.

JoolsToo · 30/09/2008 16:34

thanks again

having re-read the link I really WAS being dumb!
