How does the free travel to school thing work?

Thinking of moving....dd1s school would be a few miles away and it would cost quite a bit in bus fares too and fro...this scheme came to mind. Is it only if the far away school is the only school?

usually, although ds2 is going to a school in the next village instead of the local one because they cannot make the suitable adaptations for his wheelchair, so they will pay for transport for him, but i think it is normally if your closest school is over 3miles away
