i didn't want to hijack faq's thread so i will start my own.

basically-why do you do it? how do you sleep at night when you know what it does to you?

i know about the addiction thing but i know some smokers don't want to give it up as they enjoy it too much.

it's bizzarre!!!!!

[[http://www.freewebs.com/soaring_sphincter_travel_agency/smokers%20lungs.jpg this] is a good reason to stop surely?

what mature responses, if you had read my responses you would see that i also have an awful lot on my plate to and was hoping that nobody else would ever have to feel the way i'm feeling. still cant understand why anyone would put themselves at that risk purposefully but maybe it takes extreme pain and loss before you can see that. I will levae this thread as i've obviously caused upset and will no longer use mumsnet as i believed it was here for practical advise but also supporting one another through hard times. it is clear from the responses i have had that one persons choice to smoke is more important than another persons personal tragedy and so will seek my family for support in future and make sure their health and well being are paramount.

I love the way my mam sneaks off to have a fag, she seriously thinks I don't know that she never quit years ago when she said she did...Hello...I can smell it!
It fecking stinks!

FAQ · 22/09/2008 13:06

babyangels - you don't know CVQ's story - this thread was set up to discuss why people smoke - not to attack them.

If you wish to start your own thread looking for support then I'm 100% certain people will support you on it. but personally attacking another poster (an extremely vulnerable one in this circumstance) is not going to make people feel sympathy for you.

themildmannneredjanitor · 22/09/2008 13:07

????????????????????????? wtf is that all about??

how was jumping on someone 'supporting people through hard times?'

OP posts:
Goober · 22/09/2008 13:08

Are you still here?
I thought you were off.

CVQ. Come back 'ere.

anorak · 22/09/2008 13:09

I get the feeling babycakes is deeply upset having seen someone die a very nasty death recently. I'd like to hope that she didn't mean to be so rude and hurtful.

I can understand the concept of accepting the risks - I drink and I accept the risk of that. I came through cancer recently and even in the midst of it I didn't regret my drinking, because I'd enjoyed it so much. I still over-indulge. However, my drinking doesn't create a foul environment for others.

anorak · 22/09/2008 13:10

sorry babyangels not babycakes.

CvQ · 22/09/2008 13:11

thanks goober but tbh i jjust dont need this shit today of all days.
maybe later

Remotew · 22/09/2008 13:13

babyangels, there has been a few threads about smoking recently, they crop up all the time. They usually vent about smokers being the most vile people on the planet etc. 80/20 against any smokers that dare to add a post. This one was different. The OP asked why we do it. We told her and didn't want it to turn nasty this time.

You were told to back off and open your own thread.

Goober · 22/09/2008 13:13

I get ya, just know that we're all behind you.
One voice is really hard to hear when there are 100 voices cheering you on.
xx

Saturn74 · 22/09/2008 13:17

Goober, there is no need for the personal insults.
No-one belongs here more than anyone else.

EffiePerine · 22/09/2008 13:17

Drinking is different though, in that there are (some) health benefits to drinking in moderation. No amount of smoking is anything but horrendously bad for you and those around you. That said, it is very hard to give up (not a smoker, but DH gave up a couple of years ago - cold turkey - having smoked since he was 14. Boy was he tough to live with for few months weeks).

The 'because I enjoy it' is a very compelling argumnent becasue there really isn't any other good reason to smoke, is there?

FAQ · 22/09/2008 13:18

it's a shame it had to turn nasty - as (like abouteve says) mostly threads on smoking turn nasty - but this was just an interesting chat with no mud slinging going on.

OrmIrian · 22/09/2008 13:18

Ask for support then babyangels. MN is great for that. But don't do it by attacking others also in need of support.

onager · 22/09/2008 13:18

anorak I don't know about YOUR drinking, but in general drinking does create a foul environment for others. The smell of it (I guess most drinkers are used to it) the vomit in toilets and on pavements. The drunks staggering about. Some attacking people as the drink made them feel threatened. Many searching for their keys so they can drive home. It's not safe for decent smokers to walk along the street these days.

OrmIrian · 22/09/2008 13:20

I agree about the vomit! Best cure for a hangover - make the buggers clear it up first thing the next morning.

anorak · 22/09/2008 13:20

LOL onager.

Some people are self-destructive, whether consciously or unconsciously, and don't care..

Some people are depressive, and, because nicotine is a drug, a fag can make a huge difference to mood...

in some professions, e.g. some creative professions, smoking is more common, and you don't feel an outcast if you smoke, and therefore don't feel as much pressure to quit as you might if you were around judgmental people...

As a corollolary to above, some people finds it helps their creative work, and for them that's more important than long-term damage to their health...

Denial...

I don't smoke really, but very very occasionally have a fag, when desperate, maybe a pack a year, and I view it as an emergency solution if I'm horribly low. I know lots of people who smoke, and I wish they didn't, and I worry about them, but I can empathize. They aren't stupid people, either, they're brilliant, talented and accomplished, so it's not stupidity...

If you don't have the psychology that drives you to smoke, naturally it'll be hard for you to understand...it's like any kind of "difference."

ib · 22/09/2008 13:33

I loved smoking. I was able to limit it to one or two a day, so I suspect the impact on my lungs wasn't nearly as much as that from living in a big city.

I quit when I got pg and didn't go back as I often end up co-sleeping with ds, but I do miss it sometimes.

EffiePerine · 22/09/2008 13:35

ex-smokers: how long before you stopped missing it? DS still misses smoking a LOT and it's been over 2 years...

Habbibu · 22/09/2008 13:42

cvq, don't leave, sweetheart. It's just crossed wires, although I know it feels much worse than that. Babyangels - I understand you're having a hard time, but imagine someone slating you for having a glass of wine, or a cup of coffee right now, right in the middle of how you're feeling, and you're part way to understanding how cvq feels. I've been through exactly what you have, and awful as it is, it doesn't give you the right to tear strips of someone else - other people's lives are, sadly, often just as painful and fragile as your own.
