Shocking

You know, I'm not a huge conspiracy theorist (although I like 'em, they're interesting!) but I'm perfectly prepared to believe that the lunar landings were faked. The USA were so keen to win the space race and there have been lots of discussion about things wrong with the shadows in the pictures, the wind blowing the flag when there's no gravity etc in the past so I reckon it's entirely conceivable!

I've thought that the whole thing was fake for years and have found no-one who agrees with me that it may not have happened. Once of the main things is that a photographic film has yet to be developed by scientists that would have been able to resist the temperature and atmospheric changes it would have to encounter on the moon.

Tinker · 12/02/2003 19:32

Does anyone remember that spoof documentary in the 70's (?) purporting to explain that man had landed on Mars and had discovered life but it was hushed up? Genuinely, very convincing (but I was about 12 at the time)

Moon landings being fake? Dunno, but do LOVE conspiracy theories. Just think one of the astronauts woud have spilled the beans by now - unless they have and I've missed it. Quite a few have gone loopy or found God so presume something profound must have happened to them.

Chiccadum · 12/02/2003 19:42

If it really is fake (I do believe it is) just think how much those astronauts would have got paid to keep quiet, they would have probably been made to sign the Official Secrets Act aswell

A good rebuttal can be found here: science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast23feb_2.htm

(oh bugger I need to read up on how to link again...)

GeorginaA · 12/02/2003 19:59

LOL... just scrolled down properly on SoupDragon's link ... love it

Chiccadum · 12/02/2003 20:06

Hmmm I only twigged it was a joke site on looking at properly after posting my reply, duhhhhhhhh.

BUT, I still do think it's fake, there have been documentaries on it and the arguments for and against are very close.

GeorginaA · 12/02/2003 20:12

Hmm, I'm not convinced. Currently reading a very good site which appears to have good science in it at www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html which covers all the main points of the Fox TV show. It makes a lot of sense (and yes, I do have a scientific background but it's written for the most part in layman's terms) - I think a lot of the conspiracy theorists really didn't think their physics through...

WideWebWitch · 12/02/2003 20:18

Oh Ok, I was in a rush, didn't look at the link properly - wondered what you were on about sobernow Still think it might have been a fake.

JJ · 12/02/2003 20:19

That had me laughing out loud. Just forwarded the link to husband and am expecting to hear laughter coming from downstairs shortly.

SoupDragon · 12/02/2003 20:53

I got suspicious when I thought "Those look like Clanger lids on those craters..." Until then, I thought it was very convincing!!

OP posts:
jasper · 12/02/2003 23:05

Definately a fake.
The Clangers were not that pink

Marina · 13/02/2003 11:18

SoupDragon All round to your place for some blue string spaghetti then?
I must have seen this episode 500 times, it looks fairly plausible to me Jasper.
