AImsmum, no offence but I don't think you shoudl name anyone as it might affect a court case. (Might also turn out that there is someone else with a similar name not too far away, who might be justifiably put out).

Years ago I saw a man beating a woman up outside a chip shop while all the people inside just watched. My friend went in to call the police and the people in the shop said 'oh he does that every week'

The police came and arrested him, but you do think 'what's the point if she's just going to go back?'

Probably because she has nowhere else to go and is scared to leave. Terrible situation to be in. A friend of mine worked for a womens refuge and she said that men would do all sorts of things like one bloke would hide in the garden and if she came out he would jump out in front of her. Another guy would put flour all over the units and surfaces, including the telephone so he could make sure she didn't leave the house or call for help.

Aimsmum, well done, well done.

I don't blame you for still feeling a bit in shock, it sounds horrendous. Just well done again, the world needs people like you and your dh.

the police have new guidelines that state a man can be charged now whether the woman makes a statement or not. the idea was to protect vuilnerable women from being too scared to give a statement as they knew police would act anyway.

sdly although the police can and will press charges, unless the owman makes a statement its still pretty difficult to get a conviction without her evedence.

In this case i would hold strong hopes as there were two independant witnesses hearing what had happened. but a good barrister probably would be able to argue that you didn't see what had happened and if she claims she bumped you cannot prove otherwise

Well done to you and your DP Aimsmum. there is a very large proportion of society that really would just ignore what they heard as they arte too scared to get involved.

You & your DP were very brave when you consider what happens when people try to protect someone in a domestic incident.

Friend of DH's got quite a beating from a guy he'd stopped hitting his gf on a Saturday night in Glasgow then she started laying into him too for pushing her bf.

Hopefully she'll get out of it but you just never know what'll happen if he's that bad.

With any luck if she presses charges the police will be able to prosecute without you two.

Well done to you both!
That poor woman, she must have had to put up with this for years!
And he was doing this in a B&B, god knows what he does at home!
Until women like her press charges they will NEVER be free and the law is an ass, as any jury in the land would not believe for one second that that woman could have broken her arms by banging into a door!
Even if she does not press charges, they should offer some councilling or even just a phone number for a women's refuge.
Just hope we don't hear about that woman again as just some sad stastictic of another woman murdered by an evil man .

Blimey, Aimsmum

The really scary thing for me was that you said the man was calm.

Have yuo reported the B&B re the telephone? It makes me wonder if the whole place is a dodgy set up. Did you get that impression at all? (bearing in mind the short time you were actually there to notice such things)

cocolepew · 18/08/2008 19:51

Well done to you and DP. Isn't it horrific that other people must have heard but didn't even phone the police?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/08/2008 19:54

Oh aimsmum

Well done to both of you for doing something.

Poor poor woman. She must be in a really bad way.

And to think...this goes on all the time, all over the world.

CrushWithEyeliner · 18/08/2008 19:55

i spose you must feel relieved that somethign is happening, what an awful story ainsmum.

mistypeaks · 22/08/2008 10:15

I hope that they get him.
You did the right thing. Thank goodness you were there.
I had a similar experience recently and seeing as I have heard nothing further about being called as a witness I can assume she hasn't pressed charges .
I agree with you about how good (and young) the police are at these situations. I was very impressed.

Nbg · 22/08/2008 10:21

Blardy hell AM!

Well bloody done though to you and dp for getting involved and helping that poor woman.
Awful to think what could have happened if you and dp hadnt decided to go off for the night

Brilliant that its going to court. Really really good news.
Hopefully the arsehole will get his payback.
