My 2.5 yo has got up this morning with a wopping coldsore, well at least thats what it looks like. He's had a bit of a wet chin the past couple of days and his dummy hasn't really helped. A couple of weeks ago a child was kept away from playgroup because of impetigo (excuse the spelling) that was on his lip too and I'm wondering if it's maybe that.
Do little ones get coldsores? If so should I use Zovirax as we do.

I'd get it checked if it were me. Impetigo is very infectious, a friend if mines ds had it under his lip,it spread to his chin and had to be drained in hospital. It can be treated well with anti-biotics though. In the meantime make sure he uses a different towel from everyone else.

Not sure about Zovirax for kids, you could give NHS Direct a call, they might be able to help. Good Luck

Yes, you can use Zovirax for children - DD uses it. But it's not recommended if they are likely to be licking the affected area.

DD was about your son's age (about 3mo younger maybe) when I took her to the pharmacist with a cold sore. He wasn't happy about her having Zovirax as even whilst we were talking she kept licking the cold sore.

If you can get to a pharmacy they might be able to help.

You can give zovirax- ds1 was prescribed oral acyclovir (which is the stuff in zovirax) when he was 11 months as he had eczema infected with the herpes virus. I think it would be worth geting checked out first though in case it is impetigo (if it is you want to get in quick before it spreads and becomes a nightmare to get rid of). See if you can find some piccies on the web- ime most gp's are pretty useless when it comes to skin things so you may want to have a hunt yourself first of all
