Soap Character Turnarounds

Me and my mum were talking 'soaps' the other day, saddos that we are, and were discussing the phenomena of total personality changes in some soap characters, we came up with quite a few, most notably we thought, Billy Mitchell, who started off as a vile, nasty, Jamie-bashing brute but who is now quite sweet and thoughtful and really more of a comedy character.

Has anyone else noticed this? And who do you think has had the biggest personality change?

Maria on coronation street started off as the virgin kennel maid, very shy and never been touched, then she met Nick Tilsley and turned into the street slut, jumping into bed with anything in trousers. She's not even a nice person anymore.

Charity on Emmerdale has gone the other way, from whore to caring, compassionate, faithfully devoted wife.

Not that I'm a soap fan of course

I used to hate soaps, but now love Emmerdale and Eastenders. I thought the same as you nutjob when Mo got with him as he used to beat Jamie and his own ex-wife, this never came into conversation for mo. As for Emerdale, did you know that Charity is the mother of the girl Paddy and Emily are fostering and the father is no other than Cain.

talking about soap turnarounds, you got to mention Laura Beale, she started off as a shy nanny and now look at her.

I know, i don't believe she has gone for good, i think she will be back with a vengeance. As for Kat, i think she should end up with Alfie, if not I'll have him. Does anyone watch Hollyhoaks, I haven't watched that since the Harts died.

Les Battersby - started off as a nasty piece of work, now a comedy character.
Lots more, can't think of them now, but glad you started this thread 'cos I've always thought this, too.

What about Jim in Eastenders (Dot's husband)

When he first came into it, he was an out and out racist (hated Alan (black) who was married to Carol(his daughter) at the time.)

Now, he's best mates with the doctors dad!

it's always happening and makes me so cross sometimes as it is obvious they change the character to suit the stories but there I go having to get my dose of them! As for Alfie I think the character is a dollop of loveliness!! for Eastenders or any soap.

I have to agree, Shane Ritchie was MADE for eastenders!

Barry Evans was a slimy second hand car salesman - now, well he is still that I suppose but less of a creep and more of a comedy figure. Nice to think we can all reinvent ourselves at some stage. As for Shane Richie - love him, made for Kat, the best twosome since Den and Ang. And I fancy him like mad.
