Wedding cash - how much do people usually give?

Out of curiosity, what would you say is a normal amount to give in cash/vouchers at a wedding for:

a) a close friend
b) a not so close friend/ colleague
c) if you have only been invited to the evening reception?!!

Mostly I have not much left after paying for accommodation/travel/outfits but I would hate to seem miserly!

I am going to a wedding tonight and the wedding list just asks for B&Q vouchers. I am going empty handed. I refuse to give cash too.

I don't give cash, ever. Very rude of the couple to ask, unless it's a Greek wedding or something.

Went to the wedding of someone who had asked for money recently and bought them a big photo of their family that they wanted but couldn't afford to buy and have framed instead.

as that is usually what I can afford - don't give more than you can afford even if it's £10

Best friend's - we gave £100 but close friends (but not best best mates) would probably be £50

Depends on your circumstances but my amounts would be:

a) a close friend - £35ish
b) a not so close friend/ colleague - £25ish
c) if you have only been invited to the evening reception?!! Ahhh! Think I'd get a bottle of champagne and spend about £20

c)would try to avoid going, lol!

However, you should give what is affordable and what seems right to you.
A friend worth their salt won't give a monkey's!

although we usually choose to give vouchers for the shop wherever the list is at, I do feel funny about being asked for cash.

I've just been asked this for the first time. Been pondering on why I feel uncomfortble giving £25 cash rather than the £25 John Lewis vouchers I would happily give ....

What is with inviting people to only the evening reception?

Is it a space thing, meaning, lack of space in the church/venue where the ceremony is taking place?

I had never heard of this except among the English.

expat - evening only invites are usually for people you want to have at your wedding but can't invite to the main meal due to financial/space restraints.

You might be able to fit them in the church/ceremony venue but it's impossible to say come to the church and the evening party, but not the middle bit iyswim.

wouldn't a person just invite fewer people overall then, if they can't afford to invite them to the meal?

hmm, that is indeed very different.

I don't give money. If asked for money I ignore it and buy a small gift instead.

We usually offer to do the invitations and photographs for close friends, so that is worth considerably more, I think, to the happy couple. Obviously they don't have to take us up on the offer!
