Are you all really poor or just enjoy being miserable why would you want to be cold in your own home

Good question! 😆

Heating oil costs have seemingly doubled since last October. We have to pay upfront. This week’s delivery was over £600. So it stays off until it’s unbearable as that has to last the winter and the tank isn’t even full. We have oil filled radiators and DH wants to get a heat pump.
I badly feel the cold and work in a very old building so can’t warm up there either. I spend a lot of time in thermals, heated throws and hovering over the fireplace. I keep wheat bags, Uggs and long fingerless gloves at work.

I remember my childhood being similar . Roll on Christmas ( that’s when the heating was put on)

Haven’t put the heating on yet but am feeling the chill the last two days.. we only had it on for two hours in the evenings last year and I’ll do the same this year some evenings we didn’t put it on at all we just can’t afford it and the electricity is through the roof the last couple of years

You seen the price of heating oil compared to last year?

WildlyInappropriate · 19/10/2026 19:50

It dropped to about 16C today so we relented and have switched ours on. We have a timer which brings it on for a couple of hours morning and evening, with the stat at 18C, and that keeps it comfy unless it’s very cold outside.

NorthEastNancy · 19/10/2026 19:54

Nope. The log burner has been on twice but I've resisted the heating

I usually put it on for mornings from November but we're all up and out in 40 minutes so we don't benefit much from it

SpicyPercy · 19/10/2026 19:56

It’s at 19.5, so come on as needed. Will be moved up to 20 soon.

We’re in NE Scotland and it’s been on for weeks now. It’s timed to come on first thing for a couple of hours, off, then on from 5-11, but I’m on holiday this week and last, and DP mainly WFH so it’s sometimes been boosted in the day too.

The individual radiators are on low for now but today is frosty so they will be cranked up soon I expect.

I’m also in NE Scotland. Not far from here was -5 last night. Comparing up here with say London is chalk and cheese. It’s often 15 or 16 degrees in my kitchen so I wear an insulated jacket with a jumper on top which I take off for work calls as it’s a bit embarrassing when colleagues down south are in T-shirts still. House really needs some heat all year round but with the enormous rise in heating oil and uncertainty how prices will go I am definitely being much more careful this year to make sure that November to March are covered!

It’s awful isn’t it @GellerYeller I normally fill 500 every few weeks from November. I hope for a mild and short winter!

socialbatteryisdead · 19/10/2026 20:06

Just caved in now. Lounge was 12 😳

It’s rubbish isn’t it. Martin Lewis reports there are 1.5 million oil households in the UK. You don’t need to be ‘poor’ (I hate that term but quoting a PP) to be impacted by the the price hikes.

Glisteningfields · 19/10/2026 20:21

Very true. I resent it so much. I worry also for many people this winter who aren’t on the benefits that qualify for help with heating oil, but aren’t sufficiently “in financial difficulties” to apply for help.

It’s so uncertain how much the price will be when the tank will accommodate the 500 litre minimum refuel, and there’s no cap god knows how it’ll pan out over the coming months.

AllIwantForChrismasIsAKitchenAidStandMixer · 19/10/2026 20:49

Not yet! I’ve been tempted first thing in the morning but it warms up soon enough. I’m trying to build credit to ease the pain when we move into an old draughty house next week!

Resent is the same word I used when explaining this to a colleague!

I'm freezing in bed as my husband says a 9.5 tog duvet is far too hot and we've still got the 4.5 on.
Should I LTB?!!!! 😄

Switch to single duvets, life-changing. Now I have a lovely heavy one whole my DH had a light one and we are both happy.

caringcarer · 19/10/2026 21:56

I've not put heating on yet but we have changed from thinner summer to winter duvets and in the evenings DH, me and foster son all have our heated blankets on.

Copperoliverbear · 19/10/2026 22:06

Turned on the heated clothes horse instead

So what happens if on 1st November, we have a cold snap and it's minus 10 outside, and inside your home it's 5 degrees? You'd still not put the heating on because it's the wrong month?

It has never gone as low as -10 in November here and if it did - if it does - then I would focus on avoiding pipes freezing. There have certainly been frosts in November, but not shockingly cold spells. I know how to keep myself comfortably warm and will heat the house where and when it needs heating. I doubt it will be much before Christmas as it isn’t usually!

warmbutteredtoast · 20/10/2026 21:07

Ergh, DH put the gas fire on in the living room this evening. Is that cheaper than using central heating to heat one room I wonder?
