My aim is to get to November, lounge is 15.7 degrees C this morning though so not sure I’ll make it!

It's often warmer outside than in the house! Sometimes just don't want to get out of the warm car!

Trainstrike · 19/10/2026 08:56

Mines set to 18 and we've had a few nights of 3 degrees so it's been on lots. As a PP said, I will not part with my heating (or tumble dryer) even if I have to eat plain pasta for the rest of my days. I have poor circulation and my fingers and toes have been blue for weeks already!

We haven’t put our heating on yet and I’m just still in strappy vest tops at home.
We went to some friends yesterday afternoon and they had the heating on and I was uncomfortably hot.
We still have the fan on at night and the summer duvet, I suppose we all feel the temperature differently.

Needacalminginfluence · 19/10/2026 09:54

My heating came on for the first time yesterday morning and it came on again today. Frosty yesterday morning and even heavier frost today. The timer is set to come on for 2 hours in the morning if the thermostat falls below 15°.
The heating hasn't come on in the evenings yet because so far it's not fallen below 15° .

I never have the heating on during the night and during the main part of the day the threshold is 14° before the heating comes on so i'm hoping it doesn't come on in the day for a while. Whilst I don't enjoy feeling cold the worry of the cost of heating takes a lot of the pleasure of the warmth when it's on.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/10/2026 10:06

We’re in NE Scotland and it’s been on for weeks now. It’s timed to come on first thing for a couple of hours, off, then on from 5-11, but I’m on holiday this week and last, and DP mainly WFH so it’s sometimes been boosted in the day too.

The individual radiators are on low for now but today is frosty so they will be cranked up soon I expect.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 19/10/2026 10:10

No heating, and the windows open a lot - but I cheat!

I warm up the bed with a heated blanket each night, and I wear a LOT of layers during the day. Yesterday I wore leggings, woolly socks, a jersey maxi skirt, a vest, and a tshirt under my long dress, and a knitted poncho and hat.

Oh and I'm fat so that helps 🤣

Tel12 · 19/10/2026 10:13

My stat is set to 20c so it has been on a couple of times.

Theraffarian · 19/10/2026 10:24

17 when I got up this morning, so one of today’s jobs is going to be to set the timer to pop it on for half an hour in the morning going forward if it drops under 18 . Weather forecast is rain for the next two weeks now , and much as I don’t mind it being cooler in the day , I need a little warmth and a towel heated towel first thing !

anewstartin2026 · 19/10/2026 10:31

I’m in south east Scotland. Haven’t had it on so far but I’m off work today and decided to treat myself - thermostat said 11.5 but it really doesn’t feel that cold! But have popped the heat on for 18.

KassandraOfSparta · 19/10/2026 11:00

I don't get this idea that you heat your house according to the calendar not the temperature. It was 0c this morning in Glasgow. That is cold.

Bluenose1966 · 19/10/2026 13:19

Heating has just been on for an hour as indoor temperatures 16 degrees here in North West, Hate feeling cold and have read that temperature of 16 and below at home can affect brain function.
My Dreamland heated throw has been one of my best purchases over last few years, supposed to only cost pennies per day to run.

YourWinter · 19/10/2026 13:24

Never before December unless there’s an infant grandchild staying. It’s 16 indoors now, the French door is open, there’s a line full of washing out and I’m perfectly comfortable in leggings and a t-shirt with a light long-sleeved jumper. I’ll pop a gilet on to walk the dogs and might have a fleece across my lap when the dogs and cats and I settle on the sofa after dark. Still got the summer duvet on the bed.

Meadowfinch · 19/10/2026 13:28

No heating. It's 16 in the house and about the same outside. But I'm on my own, ds is in halls of residence, so I snuggle under a throw on the sofa and don't worry about it.

I'll turn it on when we have a frost.

I never get these threads. I just put it on when it's cold. I don't put it on when it's not cold. Confused It really is that simple...

I do not have a 'don't put it on til whenever' plan.

With your plan @warmbutteredtoast you could be freezing in mid October if the temperature is 0C at night. Then in late November it could be 20C, when you're 'allowed' to put the heating on.

Just put it on when you're cold!

15.7C is not cold though.

I try and set a date limit because I simply can't afford to 'just' put it on when it's cold. Nov-Feb, that's it. Outside of that, I tell myself it's tough and to put a big jumper on. Helps stop me from getting a shock when the bill comes because I've just been slipping it on here and there.

Not everyone has the same life as you.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 19/10/2026 13:46

Not yet, I’ve still got all the windows open at the moment. I don’t think it’s been too cold, though, and we’ve got heated blankets if we do get a bit chilly. But if we do start feeling cold, I’ll definitely be putting it on.

I suppose I didn’t explain in the original post, our mortgage just went up £300 and we can’t afford to have the heating on at 20 degrees all through the winter. So I thought I’d turn feeling a bit cold into a bit of a game! I would of course turn it on if it gets too cold, but the weather forecast for the rest of October looks like it’s going to stay mid teens so I’ll get to November without putting it on if I can ☺️

LittleWoodlandThings · 19/10/2026 14:10

Not yet, but when it gets cold enough it’ll go on regardless of the date. We’re still at the add another jumper and move around a bit stage.

I’m not sure I understand the idea of waiting until a particular date or month. If 15 degrees is too cold in November, then 15 degrees is also too cold in October.

Toooldtocare25 · 19/10/2026 14:12

Me ! Perimenopause and still sleeping with two fans on at night..,if it gets cold I’ll be on a heated throw in the living room before the heating goes on

hattie43 · 19/10/2026 14:42

I’ve had my heating on sporadically since last week . It’s on now because it’s really cold today. I hate being cold .

DozyCrow · 19/10/2026 14:45

I haven't, aside from a couple of occasions when it was on for an hour. No children in the house, just me and two young adult DDs. They have plenty of fleecy lounge wear so I've told them to use that, or a heated blanket for now, as I don't want to turn on the heating until it's absolutely necessary.

Borrewer · 19/10/2026 14:54

Midlands and nope, absolutely not even close yet.

Forton26 · 19/10/2026 14:58

Just the odd hour in a morning this last few days. It warms the house through and then it’s fine. The house feels damp if left at temps of 15/16 constantly. It’s a 30s semi so not exactly boiling! But i do like windows open for a bit for fresh air.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 19/10/2026 14:59

Not yet, house is still 18° so not needed it yet.
have no issue with setting a specific date or putting it off as long as I can but just not needed yet.

ScotchBonnet74 · 19/10/2026 15:07

Not yet for us although we have a log burner which I am now using in the evenings. I have said I'm not putting the heating on whilever my kids are going around in shorts, t-shirts and barefoot (they are teenagers, it would be different if they were little).
