"You are looking too fat, it makes me sick - eat some salad FGS" - It would be unacceptable to say this to someone wouldn't it?

So why is it acceptable to say to me -

"You are looking too slim, it makes me sick - eat some pies FGS?"

Mine was 0.901

Not Good.

And when I say mid 30s, I mean that in the same way that 38 is considered mid 30s - ie, not.

My hips are 42 inches.

It's not good. Jeans do not fit.

TestyClay · 01/07/2008 00:31

Colditz is ignoring me

colditz · 01/07/2008 00:41

Oh Testy! Sorry. No, I'm not posting on Fat Fighters any more because I am shit at it and have badly lost motivation and weight the same as I did in April and I'm embarrassed.

It's weigh in tomorrow too.

I've just posted on there actually....I fell off the wagon for a good few weeks too. But, by some bizarre miracle I didnt really gain. Must've been the added exercise via my allotment etc.

Anyway, a week back on and weight loss is doing well. Seems my body needed a diet holiday

It mightnt be so bad for you.

thumbwitch · 01/07/2008 00:50

TestyClay - please look at this thread if you have an allotment - important safety news

TestyClay · 01/07/2008 00:58

thumbwitch · 01/07/2008 01:05

Arse! sorry, still haven't quite got the hang of this - try this instead, I'll check it in preview this time to make sure.

TestyClay · 01/07/2008 01:14

DId you know the EU are trying to remove the thingy that states that all fruit and veg have to conform to certain size/shape/curvature standards? To prevent huge amounts of wastage, apparently. (and apparently some member states want it to remain in place! They must be the ones with the straight bananas/cucumbers etc.)

I mention it here because it seems to me to be relevant: we want people to all conform to an "expected norm" of size/shape/curvature and seem to think that it is ok to point it out, whether kindly meant or often not, when someone doesn't. Playground tactics - ooh, you're different and therefore I can make you feel bad about it. Not good.

thumbwitch · 01/07/2008 01:42

Just for fun I thought I'd share this tale of when someone's comment backfired on them a little:
me and my best mate and several of her mates all going out to a night club, all dressed up (this was when I was on the lower end of my weight range) - one of them looked at me and said "You know, a Wonderbra would probably help you" to which I replied "I'm already wearing one".
She was more embarrassed than I was - hah!

RubberDuck · 01/07/2008 08:12

Agree with the playground tactics and picking on differences, it can feel very much like bullying when the comments are constantly coming.

And actually, I'm getting quite cross with the "oh but it's a compliment" comments. I don't really care whether the motivation is to compliment, out of envy or just plain spite. The end result is that it's hurtful and RUDE. It's a huge confidence wrecker and fgs they should just stop and THINK.

If they wouldn't use the inverse comment on someone who is overweight then they should just keep their trap shut. End of. Stop the excuses.

justageek · 01/07/2008 08:21

i had a hellish time growing up, i stayed 7 stone from around 12-19, no matter what i ate. My nickname at school was skelator, and my teachers would constantly write home asking if i had eating problems.

It SERIOUSLY pisses me off that people think its okay to slag skinny woman, but bigger women must not be subjected to any form of critism, NEITHER types of builds should be.

lou33 · 01/07/2008 08:26

i've had this a lot

mostly people are trying to pay a compliment, but i did lose loads of weight recently which meant i then started getting comments based on concern

anyway i have managed to regain most of my weight now

i dont really mind the comments if it is people i know well, as i can tell in which way it was intended, but i do get the arse when a stranger says something

colditz · 01/07/2008 08:32

justageek, bigger women are under constant onslaught of critisism too. And we also get backhanders like "Oh you've a lovely personality"

I never asked for a lovely personality, did I? If I had been given a choice, I'd have gone for a shit personality and a 26 inch waist!

belgo · 01/07/2008 08:36

lol colditz

Kewcumber · 01/07/2008 09:06

oh shit Colditz - no-one tells me I have a lovely personality. There's no hope for me, I'm doomed.

OrmIrian · 02/07/2008 12:07

I always find this a difficult one. You see I would see it as a compliment - perhaps a back-handed one, but a compliment none the less. Not meant to be unkind. For the majority of people thinness is seen as desirable.

Fat people are seen as ugly, stupid, lacking in self-control etc etc. I can't think of any such assumptions made about thin people. The two things are not the same.
