Does anyone’s parents cry in front of them or do you cry in front of your kids?

looking to see peoples opinions whether they think parents shouldn’t cry in front of their kids or there is no issue with it :)

It depends why you are crying

Depends why you're crying.
I was brought up in an environment where crying was seen as weakness.
To this day I feel shame about crying even though I know I shouldn't.
So if crying is the natural response to a sad event, please don't pretend differently.

Controlled weeping while discussing the death of a loved one - acceptable.

Wailing and convulsing because you can’t handle your devastation - probably best kept away from the kids.

My mother never cried in front of me and I think I would have been quite distressed/ sad if she did. Or perhaps she did and I blocked it out of my memory…
My father only cried in front of us when his mother died and when my mom died. Of course it was upsetting to see him so upset.

I don’t have children but, it I did, I’d do my best to not cry in front of them or to not display extreme upset, anger etc. I doubt I would succeed as I’m very emotional :(.

I just did; my son is going through it mentally and it’s sad for him and for me. I don’t really feel the need to pretend I’m not upset.

It really depends on why and the frequency. It can absolutely be a healthy thing to do, but it can just as easily be detrimental to them.

Carryitjoyfully · 25/08/2026 18:58

Mine have seen me cry.
i think it is an important part of understanding that all people have emotions and it's healthy.

I’ve cried in front of my kids from frustration, from sadness/grief, and they have seen me cry at sad things (eg a film/ a terrible news story) and also seen me cry with joy/pride too. I always explained it, and gave it context. It’s a normal human release.

I saw my mum cry in alL these contexts too. I used to take the piss out of her as a teenager if she cried at something I thought didn’t merit it; I’m sure I’ll face the same from my kids. But I’m glad she modeled feeling her emotions in front of me.

My mother cries frequently in front of me and on the phone.
I just tell her to stop crying, which is exactly what she said to me when I was a child.

I have cried in front of my dc, when my dogs, horse and father died. I'm not really a crier, it's not that I have hidden crying for them, but I know my youngest (20) doesn't like to see me upset.

I remember my mum crying quite a bit and I felt like the world was ending - it felt so catastrophic. I remember thinking it was my fault. That's life though - slings and arrows - and at the end of the day, she was an amazing mother. I do try to avoid letting my own DD see me sad (which I am occasionally, not all the time!), though she intuitis it sometimes nevertheless.

whiteroseredrose · 25/08/2026 20:10

I did when we went to my lovely step mother’s funeral. My DC were secondary school age and found it a bit upsetting. Generally I’m not a crier so both DC still remember it.

Hatty65 · 25/08/2026 20:16

I tried not to as I think it worries children to see their parents in floods of tears.

My prime aim as a mother was to make them feel secure, not worried, anxious and unsettled. They were aware that I was sad when things like bereavements happened, but I shed my tears in bed and in private.

I'm not really a crier, to be honest.

Makingsenseofitall · 25/08/2026 20:17

I don’t really get why we would pretend to be something we are not to our children. Age appropriately. Mine know life isn’t all good and they know when I express joy it’s real. I can only be real with them. They know anyway. But thankfully it’s not so often that I cry. I have probably cried inappropriately in front of them on a small number of occasions and I regret those. On balance I’m happy they know I’m a real person and what the full range of emotions looks like.

Peonies12 · 25/08/2026 20:49

I’d say depends on frequency and reason. All the time might be confusing for children. And theyl want to know why

WashinIsNeverDone · 25/08/2026 20:56

Me and my 8 year old ds cry at movies that warrant it (wild robot anyone?)
Cried at a funeral
But its never heavy crying just a tear or 5 and explained why.

Mum never cried in front of me. When her mum died and I witnessed her crying I honestly felt so much worse. And again after dad died. Dad never ever cried that I saw.
I used to get ill give you something to cry about regularly from my parents. Felt like crying was a shameful thing.
