Jehovah’s witnesses at the door, what do you say?

I believe in god but not from same pov as Jehovah?s witnesses. I have no complaints about people choosing to follow this religion, I think it?s everyone?s right to make their own choices. Also I?ve nothing against Jehovah?s witnesses as people, we had some lovely family friends once who were Jehovah?s witnesses (although they have now moved away). But I?m not really very keen discussing these issues at the door with a complete stranger. Had a lady come round today (very nice polite lady) who was ?spreading the word? I did what I normally do in this situation which was be polite and have a short conversation with her about the issue in her magazine (avoiding talking about it from a religious pov but just life in general) and then said goodbye. My mum on the other hand is quite rude to them and tells them to go away quite abruptly. It?s really not in my nature to be rude but I?m worried that by engaging in conversation in this way I?m maybe misleading them into thinking I might convert and join them in their religion.
What do other people say?

I know what you mean but I think they encourage bible study groups as the bible is a bit of a minefield to read on your own, but it's not forbidden. I got as far as genesis...

That is what watchtower and awake, JW magazines are for, to guide you through relevant contemporary issues in relation to bible teachings.

My dad has his toilet reading - 'examining the scriptures everyday' and this little book gives you bitesize chunks of the bible on a daily basis and explains the approved JW rationale behind why things happened the way they did.

pecan?
lol almost a cod esque typo!

oatcake · 27/01/2005 18:39

and, following jesus' life as an example, he didn't celebrate his own birthday therefore JW's don't.

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 18:41

lol Coddy, I am having some terrible typos atm..... must be reading yours too much

oatcake · 27/01/2005 18:41

and, I think I remember my dad saying something about jesus being born october time rather than december. but JW's don't celebrate his birth because it was his death which was the clincher and this is the biggest date in the JW calendar and all JW's are encouraged to attend 'the memorial' at easter time.

He died as a man to prove a point. JW's see little point in celebrating the birth of Jesus as a baby as he hadn't done anything of any worth at that point.

Oh, no, JW's won't touch it because of its constituent ingredient being blood! (Mum, a RC, used to feed it to me to spite my dad - it was more a match made in hell than heaven...)

lowcalCOD · 27/01/2005 18:46

are they still together?

sparklymieow · 27/01/2005 18:50

oatcake you must have listened more than I did

twiglett · 27/01/2005 18:53

but there aren't many references to them defecating either, and I'm sure they did

oatcake · 27/01/2005 18:56

no. divorced 20 years ago and remarried more suitable partners.

mum tried to change her religion and came to every sunday meeting but in the end she thought it was a load of brainwashing.

we still had christmas and birthdays due to her.

ds is being taught that christmas is not just about presents (of which he receives very little from us as he gets the main of his presents during the year) and more about jesus and christianity.

what a minefield!

lowcalCOD · 27/01/2005 18:57

twiglett! shocker

oatcake · 27/01/2005 18:57

lol twiglett!
