Upstairs neighbour noise

My upstairs neighbours are making my life miserable, yes they are just kids and yes they can’t help it up but they run up and down all day jumping and screaming, ride toys up and down on the floor, don’t go to school so home all day, they throw things on the floor the noise is horrific I’m sure it’s laminate throughout. They stay up to 11pm most nights. Even if I go downstairs (live in a maisonette) I can still hear them. It’s a one bed flat above but keeps being rented out to families with several kids (I know COLC and all but when I first moved in I wrongly assumed I’d only have a single person or a couple living above with it being a one bed flat I was so wrong) has anyone had extremely noisy neighbours? How do you cope?

How long have they lived above you?

Have you ever (politely and calmly) approached them about how noise travels too much to your flat?

GoldenAppleCakes · 14/03/2026 15:59

I don’t know, a few weeks, I haven’t actually physically seen them yet can just hear them

And you have children?

Either way, just drop them a note welcoming them and pointing out noise really travels through the flats.

Do you own your flat or rent it

Who are the landlords of the upstairs property

Why does it matter if I have children? My children aren’t allowed to run around screaming and shouting jumping playing with cars riding up and down all day, throwing things they go to school so out most of the day and certainly don’t stay up till 11pm at night.

Edited

It matters because they may well say - indeed noise does travel, pipe down yourself!

GoldenAppleCakes · 14/03/2026 16:11

Well they wouldn’t because my children aren’t allowed to act like that quite frankly and are in bed by 8pm.

Why haven’t you just popped around or dropped a note? No drama. I am afraid with the best will in the world - Mumsnet is not able to do anything about the noise!

GoldenAppleCakes · 14/03/2026 16:21

Im not asking them to im asking if others have been in this situation and how did you cope? If you haven’t feel free to not comment.

Oh gosh I feel for you.... It's reversed here though. Downstairs neighbour causing issues. Awake till 2am cause he decided to have a party. Unfortunately no advice for you (I've been reporting for 5yrs now and always with evidence of it)
Id advise not to post a note cause I did and I had him banging at my door. I ended up calling police but maybe you could pop round with a welcome gift and slip into conversation you love to have an early night with a good book? That way they'll know your in bed and hopefully be kind back. They may not know the noise travels like that

We live in London welcome notes to neighbours aren’t really a thing here I’ve moved 4 times and I’ve never had anyone do that to me so I’d seem pretty strange. I did think the note may get their backs up so didn’t want to do anything to make the situation worse.

So.., you’ll just sit and stew.

my advice…. Drop them a note or knock.

but as I say… nothing will change unless you make the first step

I think I will just play them at their own game either have my TV on very loud or put on loud music to drown their noise out!
