Go fund me for a house deposit

Glinda25 · 26/01/2026 16:01

Hi, would it be highly inappropriate to set up a go fund me to get the funds for a house deposit? Im currently private renting but the house is full of damp from top to bottom, its starting to affect our health, im asthmatic and my partner is diabetic, my chest is so bad at home and my partners sugar levels are always high no matter what he does to bring them down. The landlord has been made aware of the damp and has just said oh well see it will cost alot of money!! I've paid my rent and if ive ever gotten behind ive always paid up yet nothing in nearly 8 years has been done in this house, the place Is falling apart but hes not interested. I was thinking of going down the environmental health route only problem is that its all been verbal I don't have anything in writing. Hes now pushing for a property inspection but I feel like he's only doing it so he can turn it round on us and evict us!! Im at my wits end council are no help and only want to give us a 1 bed flat but ive got pets so its not ideal and even then I could be bidding for years!!! I just don't know what to do!! We both work full time and still don't have enough money to get a deposit together! Sometimes we have to choose between eating or staying warm!! So fed up!!!!

Imagine the AML and paperwork on this🙈

Livelovebehappy · 26/01/2026 20:32

I honestly think OPs post is all tongue in cheek. She’s not seriously contemplating it, just putting a bonkers notion out there to a bonkers situation.

whynotwhatknot · 26/01/2026 20:34

i dont think mortgage proividers accept charity funding as a proper means of deposit probably to do with laundering

you dont need anything in wirting to report mould im sure there was a new law based on someone dying that landlords have to abide by

stomachamelon · 26/01/2026 20:36

Take the flat.

mjf981 · 26/01/2026 20:43

You can't do this OP. I can't imagine anyone will donate, and most people will end thinking 'I can't believe she's doing this' which will tarnish your reputation.

Life is unfair. I hope you find a way out of your situation. A 1 bed council flat is better than insecure housing. What pets do you have?

IMO it’s cheeky
but then I also think it’s cheeky that a friend did a go fund me for her sons gap year

I’ve seen all sorts on there over the years, some of it beggars belief. The most recent one “help me buy my dream car” with a long paragraph about how they currently had X (perfectly decent) car but had wanted Y (very expensive) car for so long so were looking for donations. I was flabbergasted.

Startrekobsessed · 26/01/2026 20:48

Don’t do it, it’s super cringe and no one will donate. An acquaintance set one up to fund her doctorate, it was embarrassing and no one gave her anything aside from a few friends who felt they should

Summercocktailsgalore · 26/01/2026 21:04

You could:
look to move to a different private rental
bid on 1 bed flats

user1492757084 · 26/01/2026 21:04

People will either donate, or not.
You sound like you have nothing to lose.

You could ask for money for your housing - to spend however is best. To spend on repairs that the landlord has neglected, to spend on a deposit for a new rental or, if you have huge sympathisers, to spend on a deposit to an affordable house purchase.

I will not be donating, sorry Op, but some people might.

BrokenWingsCantFly · 26/01/2026 21:06

Pets need bedrooms? Off to start a go fund me, my dog hasn't got a bedroom

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/01/2026 21:07

I think you need to take a very hard look at your finances and likely make some tough choices. You can't stay there. Cut back and find extra work or better paid work. It's the only way. In the meantime, if it is that desperate you must take the flat and find other homes for you animals.

MrsVBS · 26/01/2026 21:09

How about you save up for a deposit like the rest of us, moaning about the house isn’t going to do anything, it’s no one else’s responsibility but yours. Anyone daft enough to give money to this needs their head testing.

Temporaryname158 · 26/01/2026 21:18

You can if you want to, as long as you are honest about about what the money is for.

more realistically make your own progress. Go and look round private rentals without damp and put in writing to the landlord the issue naming previous time it’s been discussed. Do you have photo evidence?

simultaneously try and improve where you are and at the same time look for other options. If it is only pets stopping you getting a council property, I think you need to see if someone can take your pets for you. You and your partner are both chronically ill and that needs to be prioritised!

c0uldibeanymoretired · 26/01/2026 21:26

You’ve been offered a one bed flat and are saying no because of pets? People take these who have 1-3 kids… I don’t understand what pet needs its own bedroom?

You need to start writing emails about the mould and it’s a legal requirement for landlords to try and fix. If nothing happens you will then have enough proof to get out of your contract early to then rent elsewhere

FairKoala · 26/01/2026 21:27

Having rented a house that was single skin and was permanently freezing and costing us £600 per month to heat I would look at what you are spending on heating and what you are spending on rent then look for something that was better insulated even if it was more in rent.

The place I am in now costs me around £200 per month for gas and electric. Even without heating it is not as cold as that house was in summer

cupfinalchaos · 26/01/2026 21:28

Hibernatingsloth · 26/01/2026 16:07

You're seriously asking if it's appropriate to ask total strangers to fund your house deposit???

🤣

NotMeAtAll · 26/01/2026 21:30

You're to doing any harm as nobody has to contribute, but why would strangers contribute?

scottishgirl69 · 26/01/2026 21:32

Blankscreen · 26/01/2026 16:03

Sorry but yes it would be very inappropriate.. Sadly lots of people in your predicament not why sure you think people would be willing to bale you out.

Not. Plenty of people fall on tough times. I haven't ever crowdfunded but I know people who have when they have been desperate. Leave people be if you aren't going to be giving a penny

Lightuptheroom · 26/01/2026 21:36

The council have a rental deposit scheme for private renting if you can't afford a rental deposit, worth enquiring about that. I think people are assuming (hopefully wrongly) that you mean a mortgage deposit! If the council are offering a 1 bed property then that's because you are 2 adults with no children. You unfortunately may have to re-home pets if they are offering housing**

catspyjamas1 · 26/01/2026 21:38

What is your household income?

Thriftnugget · 26/01/2026 21:39

Not what you asked but you don’t need a tenancy agreement in writing to have a legally enforceable contract. Getting environmental health may be helpful. Give Shelter a call first for expert advice on where you stand. Your landlord may well be under a duty under disrepair laws.

Milothebunny · 26/01/2026 21:47

Contact private sector housing at your local council. They'll assess and issue a Notice on the owner to get the damp & mould sorted.

Hmmmnmmn · 26/01/2026 21:55

Do you have kids?
If not then I'm shocked you can look down your nose at a 1 bed flat for you and your partner!
Lots of people get pets and are then surprised that they have less money and less space.

Zov · 26/01/2026 22:05

Hmmm - no more posts from the OP. Just the first post. I don't think she's coming back.
