And I've run out of explanations and he keeps asking.
I've told him it's invisible, is measured by clocks, there is a past, present and future... then I'm stumped. Any ideas? Is there a website with answers to kids awkward questions?

I could handle 'where do babies come from' and 'what is poo?' but this is too abstract for me.

Time is a bit abstract!! I'm stumped if I know! Perhaps, rather than talk of time as a concept, talk of length of times eg, long times; years or how long it was since granny was a little girl, not so long times eg weeks like how long since we last went to the swimming pool, or short times eg. since you last had a bath. Quick times are easier, like how long to brush your teeth. Future times are a bit harder, I personally would talk of how many sleeps it will take.
Sounds like you have a bright young fella asking about time though!

As for awkward questions, Miriam Stoppard does an ace book called 'Questions children ask'. It's been updated i think since the first edition but its useful... not sure if it answers your question of time though!!
