Is this normal?

I was asked by a dr during an adhd assessment about how I am with opening emails etc.
Seemed a little shocked when I told her the number of unopened emails/texts/voicemails and it made me wonder if mine is really a lot higher than the average. So I wondered what does everyone else’s look like - see picture attached

I’ve got 11k unread emails. Never been diagnosed with ADHD but my life is complete chaos.

Y0208680333367 · 31/10/2025 00:26

Delete them all. You’ll have a clean slate.

Hohumhuee · 31/10/2025 00:27

Yes normal, I did spend a day last summer deleting 1000’s of emails from my inbox. I felt good for a moment but honestly it wasn’t worth it and I won’t bother again.

Largestlegocollectionever · 31/10/2025 00:30

Emails, meh, but those texts I could t bear because surely they’re someone you know actually communicating with you? Do you never read or reply to texts?!

georgiegold · 31/10/2025 00:34

@Largestlegocollectionever 🤣I do depending on who sent it. I just feel like someone will call or WhatsApp if it’s urgent. And if we’re close enough they’ll know to WhatsApp instead. But overall I find messaging quite draining🫩

Do you have your phone set up so that you see texts as a notification and can read them without opening them?

I can’t imagine just ignoring hundreds of texts like that.

However, I’ve got over 10,000 unopened emails.

I dont have ADHD or anything.

JudgeBread · 31/10/2025 01:39

Isn't ADHD fun

My Gmail inbox is currently sat pretty at 33171 unread emails. My texts are 1211. WhatsApp slightly better at 110. I have so many chrome tabs open it's stopped counting them and just displays a little smiley face.

One day I'll get round to dealing with it all... One day...

MosaDiCello369 · 31/10/2025 01:49

You’ve got no FB notifications but 412 unread text messages and 217 plus phone notifications.

DoAWheelie · 31/10/2025 01:52

Mine just says "9999+" rather than giving me an exact number. But it's been at that for over 15 years now. Probably up to a six figure number by now.

Facebook has notifications too but they don’t show in the same way for some reason. They only show in app but tbh I don’t use it. I’m just used to having it there

I actually haven’t been officially diagnosed just yet. I find out the results of the assessment next month although I’m pretty certain what the outcome will be

If I happen to be looking at the phone or on my MacBook when a text comes in, I can see the first line. But my phone is normally on silent or dnd so they just sort of pile up

Just Delete. You'll feel so much better then.

QuirkyHorse · 31/10/2025 02:51

I am the complete opposite.
I read and clear my emails on a daily basis, I would have to do a mass delete and start with a clean slate.

Currently on 112084 unopened emails over five accounts. Diagnosed adhd. Medicated now and I go through periods of unsubscribing but can't bring myself to tackle the deleting!

I’m scared to delete anything I may want to look at in the future. I’ve had maybe 15 iPhones but have been consistently backing it up since 2014 because I don’t want to start over. Silly I know

No idea what anyone else’s looks like tbh.

But I can tell you I have 107,846 emails in one account, 10,173 in another, and 12,938 in a third account. I’ve got two other accounts that I can’t remember passwords to so god knows what’s in there…

I’m AuDHD.

I’ve got over 120,000. Pretty sure I don’t have ADHD. Just so much spam and it’s quicker to search for something actually important/give it a quick daily scan than delete all of the junk. At work where I don’t get 1001 marketing emails a day and most of them are actually important I file and keep it all organised. And I read my actual messages.

Hurumphh · 31/10/2025 07:19

If it gives you any incentive, all of those emails are taking up space on a server that needs electricity to run and that heats up, so there’s a big environmental benefit to tackling them.

I’d order by date and delete anything over 2 years old.

MarxistMags · 31/10/2025 15:47

A lot of them, or at least the majority of them, will be out of date now. If you didn't need them then, you don't need them now. Go on, do it ! 😄
It will be very satisfying. LoL

Splendidbouquet · 01/11/2025 07:07

I go through my emails every day.
I don't usually read any of them. I either delete them unread straight away or leave them unread in my inbox with the intention of reading them at some point but I very rarely ever actually do. So I've currently got 485 unread emails in there.

I've always had a problem answering the phone, opening letters, or reading emails - especially those that are in reply to some conversation I've started myself. I got a late diagnosis of Autistism last year. So these are just more manifestations of my inability to cope with communicating with anyone.
