My Car was stolen but my license has expired a few months ago

My car was stolen from my drive way a few days ago, I have reported the car stolen to the police and my insurance company. I notice my license has expired due to the insurance company requesting for my DVLA I’m worried this will void my whole claim altogether.

Had anyone have this problem and did the insurance company cop out and void the claim?

Is it just the photo card that’s expired? I can’t see that jeopardising insurance. You weren’t driving it either, you don’t have to have a licence to own a car and park it on your drive.

Was the car on SORN? Your license is valid until you're 70 I think. I have to renew the photocard every few years anyway. Every 10 years. I got confused because I moved so I had to do it anyway.

Yes, it’s just my photo card but my insurance company is requesting for my DVLA code, it clearly states it has expired. I have requested for a new card 1 day after the claim.

everywhere online states I need to have a valid license card or my insurance can void my claim altogether.

The car wasn't SORN as it was my everyday use to drop off my son and groceries shopping

Anywhere reliable or Internet nonsense? I suspect the latter.

Should they refuse your claim which I think is unlikely, then you go to the Ombudsman as your photocard status isn't relevant to a theft claim.

So you’ve been driving without a valid driving licence so your insurance is void? That’s not ‘an insurance cop out’, it’s illegal and breaking the law.

@ivylam you might want to get this moved to "legal matters"

I only thought that about paper license is up to 70 because I remembered it from my mum's driving days

But I just looked online and it says paper hasn't been valid since 2015, unless issued before the year 2000

I do vaguely remember them telling me only the photo card bit is relevant now.

I'm not a lawyer - your insurance company will know, or try the legal board.

It’s just the photo card that has expired for a few months and not revoked, it is a honest mistake I don’t ever remember DVLA getting in contact to say it was expiring.

Edited

Paper licences are still valid as long as they have the correct name and address. I've been in the same address for 30 years and have not had to change mine.

They don’t send reminders. I think. I had this conversation with my hairdresser last year after I renewed mine and she said she thought hers had expired. I said she might want to sort that PDQ!

Im curious as to what was the outcome, I'm going through the same thing now!
