Wasps' Nest?

The other day dh told me that he'd found a bird's nest in a bush in our garden. I've had a look at it and it looks like no bird's nest I've ever seen and I suspect it might be a wasps' nest. It's hanging from a branch, is shaped like a pine cone, round at the top tapering to a blunt point at the bottom, and I can't see an entrance hole on it anywhere. It's about 10" tall, maybe 8" wide at it's widest point, is quite neatly formed and looks almost papery in construction.

Could it be a wasps' nest? Anyone got any ideas?

Yes, sounds like a wasp nest to me. I'd ring your local council to see if they do a removal service through their pest control department, if not ring a pest control firm promto. HTH

yep that a wasps nest, we had one last summer. dont really know what u can do though, we got a fogger spray to kill off the wasps then removed the nest, i cant see there being any wasps there (but dont quote me on that!!)maybe get a spray spray it and see if any come out, it was pretty easy for me as it was in a shed so they were confined and the spray worked a treat. x

Wasps often construct nests out of mud or a paper-like substance that they make using their saliva. Where do you see wasp nests? The large, round nests are sometimes suspended from the eaves of houses or from tree branches.

I did a search on google and this is what it said. They are also some pictures of wasps nests, do a search and see if it looks the same

MIL had one last year but they were bees. Someone came out to remove it.

Bugger! I thought that's what it might be - can't see any wasps but I wouldn't expect to at this time of year. I'll call the pest control department.

my mum and dad had one at the front of their house a few years ago. We had to go in round the back of their house just so we weren't stung. Best get it removed now before the summer!

we had a wasp nest all summer, little buggers were still about in october. As it got colder and colder and the few wasps left were obviusly dying and sluggish, dh turned a hosepipe on the nest overnight. The cold water froze the nest and killed everything off.
