Making Money for Mumsnet

I may be slow, but I've only recently noticed that Mumsnet has a Buy/ Sell noticeboard. Should Mumsnet be charging a small fee for ads about sales? Just if sales are completed? If so, how much? Would anyone use the noticeboard if a fee were introduced? Would more people consider selling/ buying if the noticeboard was given more prominence on the home page?

I'm thinking out loud here, so you're all welcome to shoot me down in flames!

Maybe Carrie, Rachel & Justine could do a bit of Kleeneze selling in their spare time

Tissy, I think it is a good idea - especially if you only paid if the sale was over a certain amount so that things with less of a financial value would still be sold.

I sell stuff through my NCT Nearly New Sale and the commission is 30%.

Sales through the newsletter are done on a % commission too as larger items are not sold at the sale (not enough room).

The local Nearly New Shop offers next to nothing to buy (it doesn't accept on commission).

If I sold something through mumsnet, I'd be happy to donate say 20% to the site. Particularly as I don't feel I can afford to subscribe at the moment. But I'd probably want to sell larger things which would require buyer to collect as delivery costs might be prohibitive.

I'm not sure how it competes with other online sales facilites though.

Does that help?

Tissy and others, thanks for the idea. We've actually not found the volume of traffic to the buy/ sell noticeboard to be that great but you're are absolutely right in saying that we've not promoted it much and there's more we can do. What we'll do is give it more prominence in newsletters and on the home page and if interest picks up we could look introducing at a small, sliding-scale charge along SueW's lines. Thanks again for thinking of us in these financially difficult times - we're touched!

I certainly never knew there was a buy/sell board!

then again, I never go through the home page...

SofiaAmes · 08/01/2003 23:18

Yes, I never go through the home page either. How about including the buy/sell board as a link from the talk section so that you don't have to go through the home page.
