Present for 10 year old girl?

Urgent help needed! My son has been invited to a classmate's birthday disco on Friday and needs a present. I have only got boys - what do ten year-old girls get for their birthdays these days? I want something between about £5 and £10 please that can be bought in a rush between bus trips on my way home. I don't really know the girl and DS1 is not the most descriptive - I think she has short hair, is into Destiny's Child, and already owns a cool pencil case (my first suggestion). All I really know is that he asked her out last month and she ran away! Obviously he needs an well-cool present to impress!

what about a diary with a lock and key? i got a treasure chest sort of 'secrets' diary and address book for my 10 yr old niece at xmas and she was delighted!

you could get them in woolies, superdrug, i got mine in m and s.

or bratz is the in thing just now, again woolies and other toy shops

A diary is a good idea! What is a bratz?

Make up, nailpolish, girly toiletry set or voucher for a cd?
I know what you mean, I'm a boys only mum too

littlemissbossy · 19/01/2005 13:33

bratz are dolls and are very popular with girls, although more than £10

nailpolish · 19/01/2005 13:33

bratz is like barbie, but cooler. they have dolls, books, games etc, a whole range of stuff

very cool at the moment with girls

Libra · 19/01/2005 13:34

I wasn't sure if ten year old girls' mums would be too impressed by make-up, but anyway this was completely vetoed by DS1, who feels it will give the 'wrong message'. Whatever!

i wouldnt buy make up for a 10 yr old.

claires accessories is a good shop - wee purses, bags, necklaces, bangles etc.

My DD1 is 10 and she loves treasure boxes, lockable diaries, Bratz (should be some in the sales), animals, art sets and music. I'm a mum who doesn't like make-up for my DDs (time enough for that later). hth

MunchedTooManyMarsLady · 19/01/2005 13:38

Another thought, my DDs were given booktokens and they were so excited. So that might be a good idea. If you wanted to just buy a book a lot of 10yo girls like Jacqueline Wilson. Her latest book is called Diamond Girls.

littlemissbossy · 19/01/2005 13:40

I only meant a bit of lipgloss or nailpolish - I didn't mean a full face of slap!!!!

Libra · 19/01/2005 13:41

Oh a book sounds a good idea! But I thought Jacqueline Wilson wrote about 'issues', which might not be acceptable - are her books OK? Sorry to be a pain, but am enough of an outcast in the village (I'm the only working mum in the village....)

Jacqueline Wilson does books for the younger girls as well. She has some "older" books but lots for younger girls. Just ask in the bookshop or have a quick scan of the back. My DD loved Diamond Girls and as it's the latest one maybe she would enjoy that.

I vet my children's books and can happily recommend JW. hth

littlemiss, sorry, I didn't mean to offend you or imply anything. Just responding to the fact that the mum might not like make-up in any form. I try not to encourage any make-up at all and if it does come home I encourage them to share liberally with their friends when they come round so that it is finished quickly.

Libra · 19/01/2005 13:47

OK. Diamond Girls it is. Thanks for everyone's help. Boys are so much easier... a new Aberdeen football scarf and they're happy!

If not too late, the little 10yr old girls I know I really into the POP PARTY cd, apparently very cool.

Slinky · 19/01/2005 15:51

My DD1 who will be 10 this year likes:

Compilation CDs
Diaries/notepads/stationery sets
Books - currently reading Diamond Girls
Anything from Claires Accessories
Arts/Crafts
