I have been meaning to take my tree and dec's down for several days now. Someone told me today that its bad luck to leave them up, but wasn't sure what date that was. Any idea's.

Traditionaly, you take your decs down on the 6th Jan, 12 days after Xmas, or beware the hob goblins will come to your house!!! And one of my grandmas special "spooks" is never do your laundry on New Years Day or you'll wash a member of the family away!! Or it could just be a load of old Tosh!!

happydays · 06/01/2003 18:18

yeah that makes sense, she said something about the 12th, but i will stop looking at this web-site and take them down immediately. thanks

6th December - today is the day 'cos it is 12 days after Christmas. I got fed up of ours though and took the down at the weekend - what a misery, eh?!

I've never really understood the Twelfth Night thing. If Dec 25th is the 1st day of Christmas, isn't Jan 5th the 12th day?

GeorginaA · 06/01/2003 19:09

I took mine down on the 30th December because I was simply sick of the sight of them by then!!

breeze · 06/01/2003 19:16

mine are still up, should make the effort really.

emmatmg · 06/01/2003 19:33

Well I put mine up on 1st December (still a big kid a heart!) so by 2nd Jan I was so sick of putting the thing back together after DS2 had yanked it in all directions that I was more excited about putting away than I was putted it up....Bah Humbug!!

clary · 07/01/2003 16:57

yes Tinker you are quite right, Christmas Day is the first day of Christmas so Jan 5 was down with the tree day. For some reason a lot of people cannot count and so say it is Jan 6. Doesn't really matter, really fed up with them now anyway, time for back to school hurrah!

Jaybee · 07/01/2003 17:06

Batey - dh's Nan always rings us on New Years Day to remind us not to do any washing - I had never heard of this superstition before I met dh's family - you are the first other person outside the family I have heard this from - I have done washing every New Year's Day since I have known dh but not managed to get rid of any of his family yet

I always understood that you should take them down on 6 Jan - but usually take mine down on the weekend after new year - this related to practicality of taking tree for recycling in daylight.

happydays · 07/01/2003 21:04

TOOK THEM DOWN LAST NIGHT AND THEN DS HAD A MASSIVE BAWLING FIT BECAUSE I TOOK THE TREE DOWN AND HE THOUGHT IT LOOKED 'PRETTY' REALISED THAT WHEN YOUR A MUM YOU CAN'T WIN.

sorry everyone, thought about my message and realised it seemed a bit stroppy. Had just read somethign in a newspaper on the subject which annoyed me but must not let things like that get to me! Do not mean to suggest that any Mumsnetters cannot count. Happydays, sorry about your DS; mine has not stoped singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer yet so I hope we don't still have that in March!

helenmc · 08/01/2003 11:53

clary - mine NEVER stop singing Rudolph the Ref, even in full summer on our way to the holiday cottage

Bozza · 08/01/2003 11:56

DS was also slightly upset when we recycled the tree.... He had spent a month insisting on the lights being on as soon as he entered the room and saying bye to it every time we went anywhere.

breeze · 08/01/2003 11:58

my fil bought ds frosty the snowman which he has played non stop since christmas, i know know what gets to me the most it singing 'frosty the snowman' or my ds whinging everytime i attempt to hide the thing, maybe i should stick it in a pile for 'round grandads house' see how he likes it.

aloha · 08/01/2003 13:35

My tree is still up because neither dh or I can be bothered to take it down. Decorations are all packed away though. Mind you, it seems more like Christmas today than it did at Christmas, thanks to the lovely snow.

binker · 09/01/2003 12:04

I took ours down on New Year's Day - desperate to get back to normal !

WonderCod · 01/12/2006 15:50
