Do you use analogies?

I've been listening again to the "The Office" (UK version), while working. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I like it.

One thing I noticed was how much I cringed at David Brent's use of analogies...and then it dawned on me that I couldn't get through life without them, as sometimes it's the only way I can express myself and make sure I am understood.

I remember when some years ago I went to see a therapist, and she asked what had brought me to her. I said "The only way I can describe it is like this; Imagine I desperately need to decorate a room, and I've managed to sort through just about everything on my own. The furniture is gone. The curtains are down. The carpets are up. It's all out there in the back garden, I've done it all, on my own, except there's one box which is too heavy for me to lift - I need someone to lift the other end and help me carry it out into the garden".

Of course, what I really wanted to say is "I've spent years and years trying to workout my childhood and I know I need help, but at £40 an hour I can't afford to pay you to do it all for me, so I've done the bulk of it, now you help me with the rest". I couldn't ever have said that.

Another time when I took a laptop to be repaired and was asked what was wrong with it, I found myself saying "It makes all the right noises and it seems to be working, but if it was a vacuum cleaner I'd have a coat hanger half way up the hose by now, poking to see if anything was stuck".

I don't know for how long I have done this (there are many, many more examples), but I do hope I've not become a David Brent. Is this normal?

Absolutely. But when I do, people often look at me strangely. I'm not sure if that makes me a weirdo or means they're unimaginative.
