a tv show for kids in the eighties called Gruey?

Weird Northern kid called Gruey, two mates - one a geeky boy with a bike and one an Asian girl with a long plait. He (Gruey) was always trying to jump over a wall. His mum owned a cafe....?? Anyone??

Yes, me and DH remember Gruey with fond scorn. DH has a thing about theme tunes that you can sing the show name along to LOL. He was in Cracker too as Fitz's son.

Ooh and he had a kidney transplant in Children's Ward and died after playing football.
