My partners been offered a job as an ROV pilot, this will involve him working away for 4/5 weeks at a time and then home for the same period, it pays very well but obviously money isn’t everything, he wants to do it though. Looking for some experience on what this is like as I currently can’t stop crying thinking I will basically be a single mother to our 1 year old whilst he’s away and will be so lonely.
Does anyone have partners who do jobs like this and can tell me what it’s like?

not a partner but my son works in the oil and gas industry. over time he has found contractors who offer better rotations.
he's in a relationship (5 years now) and his fiance also works in the oil and gas industry at a different site and time off together seems a challenge but they manage with lots of ft and online chats. plus quality time on days off.
prior to his fiance moving in he always had someone living in his home for security reasons, having a vacant home for long stretches was a worry which like i said led him to negotiate/find work with better schedules.
currently his preference is 1 week on 1 week off, his fiance does 2 weeks in 2 weeks off. and yes sometimes there only time off together is 4 days in a month i'm told. sometimes during holidays he too does 2 weeks in and shorter turn arounds if staffing necessitates it.
bottom line they are happy, home finances not an issue so worthwhile on that front. no kids yet.
my father was a merchant marine and was away 9-13 months at a time. my mom was only able to send rare letters and receive rare letters. the first day home is joyous BUT subsequent days take some readjustment to the routine and power balance.

my mom was a very strong independent woman and made it work, she was close to her family and had a small job that kept her active beyond parenting.

If you post on Scotsnet some Aberdeen/shire based MN might be able to offer some advice. Many years ago my best friend was an offshore ROV operator but he was 2on2off which to me seemed the more common rotation at the time. He loved the job.

My DH works offshore, has done for about 15 years now. It’s not always easy, especially with young kids, but you will find your feet and a new routine. It soon becomes the new normal.
