Hi. My 10yo dd fell on an escalator and cut her shin on the metal. She had all the injections as a baby. Does she need a tetanus booster?? Thanks x

@Perx i think tetanus jabs last 10yrs so it’s possible she’s no longer covered. I’d ring 111 and ask for advice.

Why would there be tetanus on an escalator?

dementedpixie · 23/03/2025 11:40

Her pre school booster also contained the tetanus vaccine. Tetanus is more for when the wound is deep and could have dirt in it. How deep is the wound?

There is a risk of tetanus if soil or manure containing bacteria gets into a wound, such as a bite, burn or scratch.
Tetanus is rare, but the chances of getting it are higher if:

  • you have not been fully vaccinated (the tetanus vaccine has routinely been given since 1961)
  • you have a large or deep wound
  • the wound is very dirty or there is something stuck in the wound

(It doesnt sound like the wound qualifies as a risk for tetanus)

Just as people's shoes would have been on it?

Thanks. I thought so. X

Lots of dirty shoes on escalators. I would.

I thought that, but unsure whether I'm being neurotic 😅

She has only just turned 10 so I think she is probably covered by the baby and pre school jabs. It bled but not crazy deep. Thanks x

Just ring your GP on Monday if you are worried. I ran ours a while back after I've off my dc got a dog bite that broke the skin. The receptionist took details, checked with the nurse and rang me back.
