How did you decide your nickname?

I guess the boards will be prety quiet over Christmas, but thought I'd get this thread started now as have been wondering this for ages.
Mine is fairly obvious - I am short! Also the first question I posted was about my rather little ds, so titchy seemed appropriate. What about others? Do you use your initials? Do your nicknames reflect how you see yourself (?Scummymummy o) - by the way this is one of my favourite nicknames! Also SueDonim - very clever!)

OP posts:
dot1 · 24/12/2002 09:22

I'm dot1 because my dp has always called me 'dotty' - and that was taken! dp's nickname is Fluffington. Not sure where these came from - too many years ago to remember!

Our ds's nickname is Beetle, which has really stuck and we don't call him anything else. I'm slightly worried that he doesn't actually know what his real name is (he's 1), but he goes to nursery 2 days a week and they use his proper name - poor thing is probably very confused!

Demented · 24/12/2002 10:01

I initially made a couple of postings in my own name but I felt very conspicuous and decided to choose a nickname instead. Everything I tried was already taken, I didn't think of putting a number after the name which would probably have been sensible, I assumed at the time that someone would be posting under these names. It was driving me 'demented', so that was the next name I tried and the rest is history! I do get notions to change it mind you as I am not sure of the initial impression it gives but it is sort of comfortable now.

Would love to hear how others got their names too, good thread titchy!

susanmt · 24/12/2002 10:07

My name is very boring, my first name and then my middle and final initals. I used it a long time ago when I joined a different community and susan was alrady taken, and as I have a dreadful memory I use it every time I need a nickname as otherwise I forget!!!

Bumblelion · 24/12/2002 10:38

When I first logged on, I used my first name and surname (Jacquikd) but then decided to change it as I felt it was a bit obvious who I was (but only to me I suppose).

I chose Bumblelion because all the other names I thought of were taken and when I was little (well, about 14 or 15 actually) I had a wuzzle called Bumblelion (half bumble bee and half lion) and I loved him to bits so decided on that name.

WideWebWitch · 24/12/2002 10:39

There was a Letterland talking bus on the floor next to me when I registered so I chose the Letterland character for W, which is Wickedwaterwitch.

Jaybee · 24/12/2002 10:59

Very boring - my initials!!

bundle · 24/12/2002 11:01

nickname from dh..

slug · 24/12/2002 12:19

Dh's nickname for me, usually prefaced by some adjective. e.g at the moment I have a cold, so I'm slimy slug, though at various points in the day I'm snuggly slug, sexy slug and usually after dinner My favourite slug.

I do worry about the sluglet though. Apart from the fact that we rarely call her by her given name, at the moment she's little one, fat girl or small and smelly, we also rarely address each other by our given names in her company. I worry that she's going to go to school, and, when asked what her daddy's name is, reply "love god".

Enid · 24/12/2002 12:41

Had just watched a film called Ghost World which featured a girl called Enid who has glasses like mine.

Lucy123 · 24/12/2002 13:07

This thread is making me feel left out. Maybe I'll find a proper nickname.

lou33 · 24/12/2002 13:45

Boringly, the first part of my name and the age I was when I first joined.

Marina · 24/12/2002 14:54

A while back we had a similar thread (lots of people have joined since!) and here's the bit that hasn't been totally archived - it was a LOT longer. Nice revival, Titchy
Old thread on chat nicknames

oxocube · 24/12/2002 14:58

Square, pretty boring and more popular in the 70s!!

glitterbabe · 24/12/2002 15:34

I love glitter and I'm a real babe

Was given it by the guys at my work when we went to laserquest for one guy's leaving do - I was so pleased I decided to keep it (for non Star Trek people, Janeway is the captain of the vessel in the Voyager series)

mears · 24/12/2002 19:12

I nicked my son's chatroom name much to his disgust

bayleaf · 24/12/2002 19:32

Thanks for the link Marina - I'm sheep obsessed mumsnetter, the house is stuffed with them - but I didn't realise until now that Eulalia was too!

willow2 · 24/12/2002 21:18

Am addicted to Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Willow is her sidekick. Had to add the 2 as someone else who has never posted had already nabbed Willow.

Chinchilla · 24/12/2002 21:31

Shame that most of the people on the old thread have now stopped posting! I too was going to start a thread like this, but couldn't because I would have had to explain where my name came from. Can't do that...suffice it to say it came from dh.

jasper · 24/12/2002 22:00

I heard a radio interview with that Australian chap who used to play Joe Mangle in neighbours and he talked about his two sons who were called Jasper and Angus. I thought Jasper was the most fantastic name and as I was pregnant at the time I asked Dh if we could call the baby Jasper if it was a boy.
He said , er, no. So I decided to call myself Jasper instead.

jasper · 24/12/2002 22:01

only on mumsnet I should add.

Eulalia · 24/12/2002 22:48

hey great bayleaf! I think my favourite is our sheep toilet roll holder.

What an unusal story Jasper. I always thought it sounded like the name for a cat. NOt that there is anything wrong with that if you know what I mean.

suedonim · 25/12/2002 03:24

Ohhhhhhh, I WANT one, Eulalia!! Where did you get it??? I love sheep, too.

Corbin · 26/12/2002 18:33

Corbin is my cat's name. The cats were sitting next to me when I signed up, and as the other kitty's name is Bob, Corbin it was!
